COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This year, we aged a limited quantity of our award winning (Brewer’s Association of Maryland Governor’s Cup gold medal winner in 2006, 2007 and 2008) Barleywine, Devil’s Milk, in Kentucky White Oak Bourbon barrels to create a uniquely tempting new brew. Hell On Wood is medium/full-bodied and amber in color with a thin, persistent, off-white head. Its mesmerizing citrus flavors and aromas, accented by notes of charred oak, vanilla, and caramelized sugar, give way to a palate dominating hop finish balanced by smoky, bourbon character and a warming alcohol presence (10.6% alcohol by volume). There’s no escape; prepare to fall to the seductive power of Hell On Wood!

Slightly cloudy amber beer with a slow-forming thin white head that disappears almost as quickly as it forms. Sour alcoholic nose with some plum, light soy, and raisins. Flavor has an initial sourness followed immediately by a bracing bitterness with overarching tannins. Mouth feel is syrupy with little effervescence. Pretty good, but it does not hide its alcohol well. Worth a try. Don’t expect to drink too many though.

Growler fill at Whole Foods. Pours a medium to dark amber, clear, very slight head. Aroma is caramel, a hint of anise, vanilla, and booze. Deep caramel malts, follow by a big shot of medicinal hops, quite a bit of anise here, and then a boozy finish, a good bit of wood present at the end. Not bad at all, despite not being my favorite hop profile. Some tannins present are a bit distracting and astringent, which detracts.

Poured as a taster at local shop. This pours a clear brown, light red hints, and looks really viscous as it runs down the side of the glass. Aroma is big and boozy with hints of caramel and malt underneath the alcohol. Taste follows suit and it just slides slowly over your tongue. There’s some hop here, but predominantly you get the alcohol, malt, vanilla, and some subtle spice. Gotta have in a snifter on a cold night. Wanna see what a full bottle will do as it warms some in the glass.

Draft at DuClaw Arundel Mills. Pours murky reddish copper with no head. Tastes like very strong alcohol with a nice warm bite bite. Slightly sweet, raisin, syrupy taste. Smooth and strong. Medium body and low carbonation. Smells like sweet toffee and raisins. Hell on Wood.

Bottle. Pours reddish brown with off white head. Nose and taste of bourbon, oak, candied dark fruit, caramelized sugar, vanilla, fruit cake and resinous hops. Full bodied. Moderate sweetness. Nice balance.

Awesome aroma of vanilla, oak, bread, frit, light bourbon. The appearance is translucent amber, thin off-white head. The flavor is like the aroma, nice. Bourbon is restrained. The finish is bourbon, pine, citrus. Medium/thick in body. Very nice.

Bottle shared at Natifest ’13. Poured clear dark orange in color with an average white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy dark sweet malt, vanilla wood and earthy hop aroma. Moderate to heavy smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy dark sweet flavor to medium sweet finish of moderate to long duration. My expectations where met with a complex beer.

22 oz. bottle from BMart - thanks again! Pours a clear, bright orange-amber color with a small ring. Aroma of toffee, oak, peanut brittle, vanilla, some fruit esters, and bourbon. The flavor is a bigger version of the same, with caramel, toffee, dates, bourbon, oak, and vanilla. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a sticky mouthfeel. Lighter in color and body than expected, but packs some heat.
