This year, we aged a limited quantity of our award winning (Brewer’s Association of Maryland Governor’s Cup gold medal winner in 2006, 2007 and 2008) Barleywine, Devil’s Milk, in Kentucky White Oak Bourbon barrels to create a uniquely tempting new brew. Hell On Wood is medium/full-bodied and amber in color with a thin, persistent, off-white head. Its mesmerizing citrus flavors and aromas, accented by notes of charred oak, vanilla, and caramelized sugar, give way to a palate dominating hop finish balanced by smoky, bourbon character and a warming alcohol presence (10.6% alcohol by volume). There’s no escape; prepare to fall to the seductive power of Hell On Wood!

651mL floating around Intuition early in the morning during the bus tour I guess. I remember speaking with GT about it and how much we like Duclaw. Pours a light, cloudy brown amber with a small, fading whitish head. Nose is sweet, light dark fruits, lots of brown sugar, lightly woody. Flavor is similar. Pass.

651mL floating around Intuition early in the morning. Clear amber pour. No head. Nose is some really nice bourbon, sweeter tomato paste, seasoned tomato, vanilla, butter, flambeed banana. Taste is spicy, too papery, hot alcohol, sweet tomato, banana, rum. Thinner, boozy, hot body.

Pours a clear copper from the bottle with filmy tan head and light lacing. Aroma of sweet vanilla, oak, and heavy bourbon. Taste follows, very sweet and boozy, almost astringent and too intense. Not bad, but too much for the time of day I had it.

Bottle:   Deep caramel, large fluffy sandy head, sticky lacing.   Big malty nose, caramel, slightly bready, with moderate bourbon, notes of wood, toasted coconut, fruit cake, and vanilla.   Similar tongue, warming, a bit alcoholic.   Otherwise fairly smooth.   The barrel aging isn’t lacking, nor dominates.   Nice balance overall.   Still feels a little green on the tongue, heat, slight hop bitterness.   Makes me wonder how much smoother it would be in 6 months to a year from now.   Moderate to full body and mouthfeel.   Finishes with a bit of heat, otherwise rich caramel body, hoppy, with notes of bourbon, vanilla, graham cracker, wood, and fruit cake.   This is one hell of a beer!   Thanks a ton Bert for this wicked beer!

22oz bomber, courtesy of ygtbsm94, pours clear deep copper with an off white head of foam. The aroma offers up sugary sweet malts, brown sugar covered prunes and raisins. It then gets some sweet smooth vanilla and whiskey notes near the end of the draw. The taste delivers prunes and raisins mixing with a brown sugar like sweetness. It then slides into sweet smooth whiskey like notes that are almost getting candy like in sweetness. The barrel to beer balance is spot on for my taste as I get a good bit of both. Nice barrel aged barleywine.

On tap at Klobys: Pours a clear deep bronze amber with a thin ring of off-white bubbles. Nose abounds with rich bourbon oak and sweet caramel toffee. Body starts with good fullness and chewy sweet caramel malts with some light fruity complexity and plenty of bourbon flavor with a nice balance of piny hops before a slightly warming finish with lingering bourbon character. This should age well.
