COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This year, we aged a limited quantity of our award winning (Brewerís Association of Maryland Governorís Cup gold medal winner in 2006, 2007 and 2008) Barleywine, Devilís Milk, in Kentucky White Oak Bourbon barrels to create a uniquely tempting new brew. Hell On Wood is medium/full-bodied and amber in color with a thin, persistent, off-white head. Its mesmerizing citrus flavors and aromas, accented by notes of charred oak, vanilla, and caramelized sugar, give way to a palate dominating hop finish balanced by smoky, bourbon character and a warming alcohol presence (10.6% alcohol by volume). Thereís no escape; prepare to fall to the seductive power of Hell On Wood!

The hints of bourbon from the barrel process donít help mask the high ABV, but add a unique flavor. Itís nearly a bourbon Boilermaker in a bottle. Nice aging process for a barleywine.

Outstanding barleywine style beer. it had the ABV, the sweetness, the bourbon, but it also had a champagne quality that balanced the often overwhelming sweetness of the style. one of the most balanced barleywines iíve ever tasted.

Bottled 01/15/15. Nose is very sweet and oaky, tons of vanilla seeping up with strong and presumably sticky caramel, spice; theyíre right to name it after the dominant wood character. Heavy spirits (Bourbon, very slight Port). Pours cloudy amber with firm carbonation and a dense, foamy beige head. Taste is sweet and hot very fiery alcohol, very heavy body with medium bitterness and extremely heavy spice and oak; strong vanilla, caramel, sugar, with just a wisp of smoke. Toffee and sticky lips. Man, that Bourbon essence is strong and warming, dominates all it surveys, but at least the strong malt base resists buckling under the weight, and thereís enough fresh (citric) hop character to add balance from that part of the spectrum (oils are a nice counterbalance to the alcohol, as well). Itís an extreme and unchecked barrel-bomb, to be sure, but a superlative sipper for Bourbon and cigar fans.

12 Fl. Oz. Bottle. Poured brown with a tan head. Aroma of bourbon, malts and caramel. Some fruit notes, malts and certainly lots of bourbon/wood notes. Very good beer.

Bottle on the RBWG bus. Pours a clear copper with beige head. The aroma is caramel and vanilla. Thin mouth with sweet vanilla, toffee, caramel with a boozy finish.

Draft at Il Forno in Frederick, MD. Served in a classic pils glass (!?), hazy tannish dark brown color with thin tan head. Aroma notes of heavy malt sweetness, dark fruit, caramel, oak, vanilla, light chocolate and bourbon. Taste adds notes of toffee, molasses, apple, dried fruits, smoke and earthy hops. Heavy body, low carbonation, creamy, rich with sweet caramel-like finish. Not boozy at all, heavy bourbon and sweet malt notes. Pretty tasty.

Donít know where to start, so much going on. Caramel, toffee, wood, bourbon, warmth. Nice creamy thick head and lacing. Makes my lips tingle.

Strong Bourbon character on the nose. Appearance is very dark brown with a small tan head with poor retention. Flavor is full of bourbon and oak with notes of chocolate. Roast character is smooth. Mouthfeel is medium with medium carbonation. Overall, it's a well made bourbon barrel stout. Bourbon flavors are high now, but with age they will blend in with the beer. It's a good beer to age. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aroma of bourbon, oak and caramel. Appearance is a cloudy brown with a medium sized white head. Bourbon flavor is strong. Oak is in support. Malt contains some hints of caramel. Medium fruity esters. Hop bitterness is high which provides some citrus notes. Mouthfeel is full bodied with medium low carbonation. Alcohol warmth is present and strong. Overall, there is too much bourbon flavor and not enough malt complexity. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Really tasty and drinkable barleywine. Carmel taste up front, then the wood, and a tasty sticky hop finish.
