COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This year, we aged a limited quantity of our award winning (Brewerís Association of Maryland Governorís Cup gold medal winner in 2006, 2007 and 2008) Barleywine, Devilís Milk, in Kentucky White Oak Bourbon barrels to create a uniquely tempting new brew. Hell On Wood is medium/full-bodied and amber in color with a thin, persistent, off-white head. Its mesmerizing citrus flavors and aromas, accented by notes of charred oak, vanilla, and caramelized sugar, give way to a palate dominating hop finish balanced by smoky, bourbon character and a warming alcohol presence (10.6% alcohol by volume). Thereís no escape; prepare to fall to the seductive power of Hell On Wood!

Dark orange/ruby pour into snifter with thin white head - this is a noteably beautiful beer. Aroma of fruit/malt/bourbon. Taste is much of the same, but the beer has a bit of an off-bite or edge, but I would suspect that a year or so of aging could solve that issue entirely. Otherwise a very solid bourbon barrel aged barleywine. Itís in the same league as Central Waters, but falls a bit short of the Victory Oak Horizontal or Sucaba.

Pours a dark copper with a tad bit of a head. Wonderful citrus, dried fruit aroma. Taste is big and smooth. Fruity initially fades gently. Not much hotness from the alcohol

Awesome aroma of vanilla, oak, bread, frit, light bourbon. The appearance is translucent amber, thin off-white head. The flavor is like the aroma, nice. Bourbon is restrained. The finish is bourbon, pine, citrus. Medium/thick in body. Very nice.

Dark amber with reddish hues and rimming beige head; aroma has notes of cinnamon and bourbon but both are softly blended; Flava is rich bourbon and sugary sweet malt; feels thick with nice fizzy bite; finishes dry and sweet boubou notes throughout

22 oz bottle - 2012 vintage. Pours clear, crimson gold with thin, diminishing tan-white head. Big aromas of toasty vanilla, sweet oak, oranges, caramel, and maple goodness. Thick bouquet. Taste is all orangey whiskey, good vanilla and bourbon notes, well-balanced with hint of burn in the middle. Medium-full bodied, touch sticky, but nice dry finish. Finishes with distinct whiskey note. Well done, nice warmer. Not over the top, but delicious.

Served on tap in a chalice glass Appearance Ė The beer is served a golden amber color with a billowy white head of one finger height. The head has a decent level of retention, fading over time to leave a decent level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell Ė Just like its non-barrel aged brother (Devilís milk) the aroma of the beer is heavy of sweeter aromas of caramel and toffee. Mixed with these smells are some aromas a lightly floral and earthy nature, but these are rather light overall. Some oaky and woody flavors as well as a moderately strong dark fruit aroma of cherry and fig are there mixing with a bit of a boozy smell nicely, creating a rather warming smell overall. Taste Ė The taste begins, just as the Devilís Milk does, with a very sweet and malty taste with plenty of caramel and toffee sweetness matched with a good showing of a bready nature. As the flavor advances some of the fruit flavors that were detected in the nose come to the tongue with some cherry hitting the tongue. Here is where it diverges slightly from the Devilís Milk, with some flavors of oak and wood coming to the tongue. Again however sweeter tastes later come, with a good lot of candied sugar and a bit of some lighter fruit flavors of orange and pear. A bit of hop flavors also come to the tongue; consisting mainly of a floral and citrus nature. Some more boozy and oaky flavors joint the flavor profile in the end and with a light earthy flavor coming to the tongue, leaving one with a rather sweet and lightly hopped flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel- The beer was average in thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is average to lightly below average. The lower carbonation is very appropriate for the sweet flavors of the brew, but a slightly thicker body may have accentuated the wood/oak flavors of the brew better. Overall Ė Very Similar to Devilís Milk in nature; just with some hints of wood and oak and maybe a hint more of booze. If choosing between this and Devilís milk and this and if they are at the same price, then choose this, but if you have to spend much more, save your money and just go with the Devilís as they are not all that much different.

22oz bomber, courtesy of ygtbsm94, pours clear deep copper with an off white head of foam. The aroma offers up sugary sweet malts, brown sugar covered prunes and raisins. It then gets some sweet smooth vanilla and whiskey notes near the end of the draw. The taste delivers prunes and raisins mixing with a brown sugar like sweetness. It then slides into sweet smooth whiskey like notes that are almost getting candy like in sweetness. The barrel to beer balance is spot on for my taste as I get a good bit of both. Nice barrel aged barleywine.

Bottle: † Deep caramel, large fluffy sandy head, sticky lacing. † Big malty nose, caramel, slightly bready, with moderate bourbon, notes of wood, toasted coconut, fruit cake, and vanilla. † Similar tongue, warming, a bit alcoholic. † Otherwise fairly smooth. † The barrel aging isnít lacking, nor dominates. † Nice balance overall. † Still feels a little green on the tongue, heat, slight hop bitterness. † Makes me wonder how much smoother it would be in 6 months to a year from now. † Moderate to full body and mouthfeel. † Finishes with a bit of heat, otherwise rich caramel body, hoppy, with notes of bourbon, vanilla, graham cracker, wood, and fruit cake. † This is one hell of a beer! † Thanks a ton Bert for this wicked beer!
