COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In a stroke of genius (or insanity) inspired by a trip abroad, Professor Wagner has created a brand new concoction for your enjoyment, X-5: Imperial Rice Ale. This medium-bodied, light golden ale is brewed with flaked rice for a crisp, effervescent mouthfeel and moderately strong 7.2% abv. Japanese Sorachi Ace hops add unique aromas and flavors of lemon grass to complete a far east inspired beer drinking experience unlike any other.

20110615 Tap at Bel Air. Slightly clouded, big beige head that sticks. Aroma is citrus and metal (coins) with predominant tangerine, lime, saltine. Very full bodied stuff with ample carbonation and quick but brisk finishing bitterness, not nearly as sweet as I expected. Hops rule the show here, but the balance is oddly keen because while there’s plenty of maltiness it’s surely not grainy or bready. I assume that’s due to the rice used. Nice concept and well executed, and tasty enough for a second pint. For a strong beer, this hit the spot on a warm, sunny afternoon on the patio at DuClaw.

Very good strong flavor, could really feel the alcohol in this one yet it had a nice hoppy finish.

Draft. Pours clear gold with an off-white head; good retention and lacing. Aroma is heavy citrus, honey, straw, and light toasted malt. Flavor is initially caramel malt, but quickly transitions to citrus, hoppy taste; lime/grapefruit bitter finish; very refreshing. Medium body, warmth, and carbonation.

Smells and tastes like grossness. Is cold? Not great. Strong. Rice in beer?

Hazy reddish amber color. Hoppy rice aroma. Taste lots of rice with hoppy. Kinda weird tasting with the rice.

Draught pours dark golden with an off white head. Aromas of bread, and a little funk. Taste is IPA like and the finish is a nice bitter end with the Sorachi hops dominating. This beer has a great finish with those hops. Taste is slightly booze and bready with a dry hop finish. Overall, very different and inter esting.

Draft at Bowie location on 06/03/11. Arrived at the table a clear copper/orange color with a skim of a beige head. A pleasantly fruity aroma of caramel, grapefruits, pineapples, lemons, and spices. Went down medium-bodied, yet crisp and refreshing. Fruity and spicy taste-wise. Solid caramel flavor upfront with plenty of tropical fruits following. Lemony, spicy, and a unique graininess throughout. Quite enjoyable.
