COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Haunting the congregation with its distinct copper color and rich toasted malt flavor, this true German-style Oktoberfest lager is smooth in body and uses German hops in the brewing process to balance out the distinctive, toasted malt sweetness. The clean smoothness is created by the long conditioning (lagering) process of 8 weeks.

Bottle from Wegmans. Pours clear reddish orange with a small white head that is gone before you take a sip. The aroma has a lot of sweet caramel, some very light hop presence. The taste has a light bitterness in the back but has a lot of caramel sweetness up front. A bit too sweet but a decent Marzen.

On tap 5 oz. sample at DuClaw in Bowie, MD. Clear , dark amber with an off-white head and good lacing. Aroma of caramel, brown bread, toffee and a touch of peppery spice. Taste of caramel, peppery spice, toffee, nuts and a mere modicum of hops. Medium body and high/medium carbonization. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft at Milk Boy. Unexpectedly sweet. Hazy amber pour. Slight foam at the top. Sweetness drowns out the hops.

I’m a big Oktoberfest fan. This almost had a hint of herbal medicine or something. It is alright but disappointing. Iron dragon represent!

Pours a medium brown color... not very happy. Tastes like a European beer without the body or bitterness.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass. A: Pours a copper color. I like how fluffy and soft the two finger, off-white shaded head is, in particular. Not only is the retention quite good, but the lacing this leaves behind is quite plentiful. S: I pick up a lot of not only caramel, but also DuClaw’s house profile: a vaguely peppery tone. There’s also plenty of toffee, and even a touch of a hop bite. It doesn’t seem to have the sweetness some marzens have, either. T: Touches of caramel and toffee open this one up...and that’s about all I pick up in terms of the flavor profile at first, apart from the aforementioned house yeast character. But something strange happens once it warms up - it develops a bit of character. No, it’s not enough to make this anything more than an average marzen, but the nutty qualities are a bit of a welcome respite after a first half that was simply bland, bland, and bland. Still, it’s nothing spectacular. M: On the other hand, I really like that it features a soft, lush mouthfeel and a full body. Or do I? This is a classic case of "too much body for the flavors presented", so all this really does is harm the drinkability factor. Carbonation is about average for the style, which is to say it’s pretty high. O: Eh, mediocre. Having said that, it does grow into something very slightly above mediocre as it warms up. I’d still pick a number of marzens over this one, though.
