Bottle thanks to hopscotch sampled on 7/2/06: Pours a viscous completely opaque with a nicely-lacing frothy dark tan head. Big complex sweet dark malty aroma has lots of good dark fruits, plums and a smooth bourbony oaky balance. Body starts with a nice sweet thick caramel maltiness and full complex and very well balanced bourbon oaky character. Finishes smooth and sweet with a good dark fruity character and liquid dark chocolate hiding the alcohol very well.

Sampled on cask at RFD’s as part of RBSG 06: Pours an opaque viscous black with a thin ring of large tan bubbles. Aroma of sweet dark caramel and complex oaky bourbon. Full, complex, sweet dark malty and dark mocha chocolate flavor has some warming notes, but is well-balanced. I prefer the bottled version over the cask, but both are quite tasty.

Poured black with a big dark-tan head. Aroma has bourbon, oak, and chocolate malts. Some coffee as well. Taste also has a good amount of oak with more roasted chocolate. Alcohol is well hidden. Some coffee too. The finish has more oak and slightly nutty flavors. Very good.

Pours a black color. Smells slightly of Bourbon. Nice smooth chocolate taste with some slight Bourbon tastes.

Thanks to nimbleprop for sharing this brew last weekend. Served in a Cigar City snifter. Pours near-black with a thin mocha head and a bit of lacing on the way down. Thin collar throughout. The nose carries some oak to go along with roast and chocolate. Some faint coffee. Flavor is along the same lines but a bit more pieced together. Feel is nice and the oak adds some depth. Pretty good, but nothing too earth-shattering.

Pours dark-brown almost black with a medium tan head. Coffee and toasty notes are upfront and apparent. This beer a lot of bourbon like flavor likely due to the oak aging and finishes with a slight dark chocolate note. Overall a very good beer ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Oil black with a thin brown head. Aroma is roasty with an acidic coffee note, and taste is the same, with mild marshmallow bourbon and bittersweet chocolate into the finish. Perhaps a bit sweet. $8/22oz

From cask at RBSG tasting, RFD, Washington DC on 14 July 2006. Really rich but not too sweet or sticky. The Bourbon barrel treatment is noticeable but not overwhelming (as it sometimes can be). All-in-all a powerful but well-balanced and surprisingly drinkable number.

Viscous black pour and a thick chestnut colored head. Aroma shows light oxidation with hints of vanilla, bourbon, and roast. Silky smooth mouth-feel. Roast, coffee, chocolate, oaky tannins, and bourbon. Dry bittersweet finish. Alcohol extremely well masked. After 4 years this beer has managed to stay well balanced and complex. I always love beers in this style category that are not overly cloying.

Firkin @ DuClaw Real Ale Festival. Deep brown and black pour with very little head. The head that is there is light tan. Very nice coffee, smoke, camp fire, and bourbon aroma. Initial tast was a lot of coffee. Subsequent tastes revealed sweet cream, bourbon, Great depth of flavor. Good roast and fairly smooth bitterness. Oak added to the already great BJ Stout. Good idea Jim!

Courtesy of Dragonstout. The aroma is rich milk and dark chocolate with cocoa, vanilla, bourbon, oak and coffee. The body is full black and holds a thick mocha head. Big boozy bourbon at first then some vanilla and oak followed by that coconut like flavor I get in a lot of barrel aged beers. Coffee, chocolate, smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Not as intense of an alcohol burn as I thought it would be. Very nice.
