Serum is our version of a Double(Imperial) India Pale Ale. It is aggressively hopped at several stages of the brewing process including a dry hopping that takes place little by little over a 2 week period. With an OG close to 19Plato, this beer is big and hoppy, yet has a strong malt backbone that keeps the huge hop bitterness from being overbearing. Available in VERY limited quantities and only at our pub locations.

Reviewed 3/8/13. 12 oz bottle into a nonic pint glass. A: Pours a cloudy dark copper color. The head is a one finger offwhite shade. Retention is pretty good given its alcohol content, and the lacing left behind is nice looking as well. S: Malty. Thereís a lot of caramel, biscuit, and brown sugar in the malt backbone, weakly supported by some faint piny hops. Maybe thereís a touch of weed here as well. DuClawís typical yeast profile comes across less peppery and more...dare I say cardboard-like? Not sure about the age of this one, but Iím not impressed regardless. T: Hops are very faint here, except perhaps a faint bitter bite on the finish. This one is very much a malty DIPA, and a sweet one as well. At first, there are a surprising amount of plum-like qualities, which will eventually give way to a sweet caramel midtaste. It finishes with only faint piny hops, a sensation badly overpowered by heavy-handed brown sugar and orange sweetness. Good gawd, this is sweet, even cloying; and it can NOT get away with it the way Misery did. M: The body is really creamy, thick, and syrupy. As a barleywine, the texture works well - but this is a DIPA, so itís just overbearingly difficult to sip (for the record, I donít like most malty DIPAs). The hops cleanse the palate only enough to expose some boozy qualities, without really hiding much of the sweetness or giving the body extra drinkability. O: A poor DIPA; a passable barleywine/strong ale. Iíll be fair to it - the flavor profile screams "badly aged DIPA" to me. Itís not drainpour bad, but itís going to take a long time to put this one down. Itís just WAY too sweet for my tastes.

on tap. Dark yellow in color with off-white head. Mostly citrusy hoppy aroma. Medium bodied with creamy texture. Moderately bitter with grassy and floral hoppy flavor notes. Not as intense as I expected.

Some citrus and tangerine on the head of this. OK malt backbone, and balance is decent. Good if nothing super original. Tap at BWI brewpub.

Aromabread, bread, floral, citrus, leaves, raisin, Appearance orange, hazy, white foam, Taste light sweetness, medium bitterness, Palate medium body, sticky, average carbonation, Overall I like that the alcohol is almost nonexistent in this 9% beer so I would suggest this beer to a friend

Meh. I found this to be on the line between an IPA and an imperial/double IPA. it had *most* of the aroma, body, and taste, but not enough for me to think "damn this is a seriously hoppy beer." If they called it an IPA, iíd have given it higher marks; as an IIPA...well...itís mediocre.

Pours dark brownish orange amber with an average white head that fades fast to a rim. Does not stand out visually. Aroma is pretty great. Sweet, dank resin predominates with some caramel malt and a bit of orange. Quite an active and clean bright mouthfeel and very balanced. Flavors of citrus and caramel; jammy grapefruit bitter sweet pine goodness. Very well-balanced with a solid malt backbone. Really good.

Poured from 12 oz bottle a hue of amber and orange, fair head and lacing. Aroma of clove, spruce, grapefruit, wet earthen field grass, milk chocolate, and lightly toasted grains. Flavour of big caramel, sweet, sticky malt, pine resins, soft citrus and spicy hops. Body is medium with a creamy, bubbly carbonation. Decent enough I suppose, recommended.

Growler. Drinks very easily for a Double IPA, with hops that are very prevalent but wonít rock your face off. That said, when I drink a Double IPA, I WANT my face rocked off. This beer is fine, but there are lot better beers of this style out there to be had.

Some east coast brewers can make great IPAs, and this is one of them. In your face bitterness, but buttery smooth on the back end, super thick creamy head, lacing coats the glass. Plenty warm and glowing.
