Another experiment from Professor Wagner’s lab has broken free and broken out! X.4 Macchiato Milk Stout invades your local DuClaw Brewing Company Thursday February 17th, 2011. This classic sweet stout, is black in color and medium-full bodied, with a silky, velvety mouthfeel. X.4 boasts lush aromas and flavors of espresso, chocolate and roasted malt imparted by the addition of espresso verdi to the recipe. It is moderately strong in alcohol (6.3%) with just enough hops to balance the big roasted malt and coffee flavors.

Saved at Capone’s for me, so aged a bit. Black with a minimal topping, and lace. As it warms, getting cherry and lactose. A sipper, but decent to try.

My Bottom Line:
Mineral angles enhance this oily Stout’s burnt roastiness before sweet dulce de leche flavors take over for the long run.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam slowly fades to a ring atop the brown-edged darkness.
-Initially, there is a nice balance of coffee, lactose and dark malts.
-The aroma leans more towards roast and char than chocolate and sugars.
-A light acidity appears in the finish.
-The mouthfeel is strangely oily. Not entirely appealing...
-Coffee comes off as sweet and diluted; not the best showing on that front.

Bottle. Thx Steve!

Bomber from Capone’s and Craft Ale. Pours turbid black with tan head that laces well. Nose is great; rich notes of coffee, cacao, roasty black patnet malt, lactose. Tastes dry, rich, lactosy, with notes of charred black patenjt malt, cacao, coffee, and a complex finish.
