3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 GT2 (3970) - Washington DC, USA - MAY 24, 2010
500mL thanks to CaptainCougar. Pours a cloudy, super deep brown with a thin, brown head that sticks around for a bit and leaves some baby lacing. Aroma is tar, sap, straight booze, Bailey’s Irish Cream (yes- good call Mac). Taste is boozy (only 7% though), ultra bitter chocolate, coffee grinds, spicy rye, earthy hops. Super in-your-face imperial porter. This is perhaps the first imperial porter where I would say definitively that yes, this is an imperial porter, and can no way be an imperial stout. This is a great example of an otherwise nebulous style.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 argo0 (9226) - Washington DC, USA - MAY 23, 2010
50cl bottle, thanks CaptainCougar. Large tan head that mostly dissipates, dark brown body. Aroma is moderately sweet, milk/bittersweet chocolate, some spice, cookie. Taste is moderately sweet, bittersweet chocolate, earthy/grapefruit, some spice, smoke/roast. Medium body, low carbonation.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 nimbleprop (2235) - SouthWest, Washington, Washington DC, USA - MAY 23, 2010
50cl bottle pours a nearly opaque, deep brown with a thin, beige head. Smells like rum, straight booze, raisins, port, toasted dark bread, Bailey’s Irish Cream. Flavor is brown sugar, bread, malty, sugary, tree sap, spicy rye, a little rubber. The nose and flavor are really unique. Finish is full bodied and dry.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 rosenbergh (3491) - Helsinki, FINLAND - MAY 14, 2010
500 ml bottle. From Malmö, Sweden.
Black colour with some reddish nyances and average tan head.
Aroma is heavy with chocolate, cocoa, liquorice, salty liquorice, milk coffee, roasted malt, sand and cream. Flavour is coffee, roasted malt, some bitter hops, liquorice and salty liquorice. Bitterish coffee flavour stays forever. Flavour is a bit too much coffee for me. Smooth.
3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 Pundarquartis (17) - Odense, DENMARK - MAR 29, 2010
Aroma: Nutty, smokey and sweet... pleasant and fresh... think of it as summer-porty-ish.
Appearance: Black with créme-colored head.
Taste: My first impression was, disappointment. A slightly sour taste with a hint of coffee and cigar smoke at the back of the tongue. However this taste was pale and watery.
Palate: Light and easy but without body... feels like somethings missing on the palate.
Overall: To sum it all up, it’s a decent session beer, but it doesn’t excel at anything really.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 rmasa (324) - Vantaa, FINLAND - MAR 22, 2010
Pours black with medium-sized beige head; sweetish aroma of roasted coffee beans and loads of licorice; medium to full bodied, quite low carbonation, smooth texture; roasted coffee flavor with again strong licorice presence; ends sweet and salty. This beer is, for once, everything the label promised and nothing more. Probably a touch of chocolate would have been the cherry on the top of the cake, but that being said, this is still hugely enjoyable brew.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 kmweaver (3045) - Santa Rosa, California, USA - MAR 16, 2010
50cL bottle, courtesy of Blomster. Thanks, Christer! Pours a very dark, cola-brown color; fine-bubbled, medium-brown head with good retention and very attractive lacing; nice pour. Lots of nougat, caramel, and nuttiness in the aroma; creamy, soft approach; loads of caramelization and intricate maltiness in the nose; why do Swedish porters tend to be so awesomely done?; chocolate, roast, all just delightfully integrated. Medium-full body; relaxed carbonation, and a very creamy texture in the mouth; very oily, inky, and moderately heavy in the mouth, but the mild acidity and carbonation help keep this from feeling lifeless in the mouth; huge amounts of nougat, oily nuttiness, chocolate and caramel maltiness; very minimal show of hops here, but the malt character is just so lovely and dense; the roast and charred notes do approach a slight chalkiness and lead to some palate fatigue; hops of some sort could keep things enlivened here a bit better. Lasting finish of caramel, roast, nougat, and bitter chocolate; nicely balanced finish, with a wider display of mineral bitterness at the far end of things; tasty stuff.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20 tkrjukoff (2676) - SWEDEN - MAR 13, 2010
Great black color with creamy head. Miixed taste of coffee, caramel and cocoa with nice touch of hoppyness. Nice bitter finish. Very pleasant to drink.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 Ingevara (662) - SWEDEN - MAR 1, 2010
Nearly black with a small head that quickly disappears. Burnt smell. There are some coffee and smoke nuances, some licorice as well in the finish, but also flavor of smoked sausage and badly ventilated saunas. Can easily be enjoyed on a snowy winters night in front of the fire, but doesn’t work well with food.
2.2 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 7/20 TEJA (788) - Stockholm, SWEDEN - FEB 20, 2010
I don’t like coffey and liqurish. This beer contains both and a big taste of roasted oat that don’t appeal at all to me. I would say this has more the carractair of a stoute than porter.
