COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

Bottle at RBESG grand tasting, August 2005. Rich, reddish copper colour. Rather unusual combination of flowery hops and heavy caramel malt. The malt was not very refined and had a slightly stagnant feel. The tangy bitterness coming from the hops compensated, but I still found the balance a little suspect. An intriguing beer though - always interesting to get European takes on British beer styles. Just makes you realise how difficult categorisation is.

Flaske 0,33l fra Systembolagets e-beställning. Drukket hjemme 2 Mai 12. Dyp brun. Høyt, litt farget skum som varer ei stund. Søt fruktig aroma med undertone av malt. Smaken er dominert av malt. Myk munnfølelse. Fruktig bitter ettersmak. God. KI=4

Bottle. Red-brown with a short lived head. Aroma would be pleasant - floral-hoppy, caramelly and fruity with ripe apples, redcurrant and dark grapes - were it not covered with a prevalent musty yeastiness that is complemented by faint buttery and banana notes. The bitterness is moderately strong and pleasant but doesn’t manage to save the day. Not too much taste apart from the mustiness I’m afraid. The fruitiness is very subdued by that. Maybe I got a flawed bottle.

33 cl bottle courtesy of Travlr. Amber pour, small head. Aroma is estery, sweet fruits, caramel malts, breadiness. Taste is rather sweet, estery English yeast, sweet malts, dark rye bread, and an iron-ish rusty note that seems a bit off. It's OK, and I guess decent for the style.

Aroma is to me British, earthy, perfumy, bit weird considering the hops used. Colour is reddish, medium head. Flavour is also surprisingly British, earthy, smoke? Chocolate, jam. Mouthfeel is average. Ok interpretation of the style.

33 cl bottle from gnoff. Pours deep mahogany with little head. Sweet scent with notes of citrus and graham cracker. Taste has caramel and gingerbread with a little hop bite and lingering bitterness in the end which adds to the complexity of the brew.
