500mL bottle. Poured garnety-brown with a looser-bubbled beige head. The aroma picked up pineapple, earth, and other citrusy hoppage over maple and caramel sweetness (more maple-focused).. it seemed a bit aged, but it’s dated November 2011. The flavor found maple again at the core, joined by darker bread.. pine resin and citrus bitterness around.. oxidation was apparent on the back and finish.. not all that interesting. Medium-bodied with low carbonation on the palate.. some sourness scattered through it.. again there seemed to be some oxidation.. not a great flow. This was disappointing.

Bottle 50cl (from Jun-10). A clear dark red-amber colour with a small off-white head. An aroma of malt, hops, caramel and citrus. The taste is heavy sweet and medium bitter. A medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation and a long finish.

Kinz (3410) - Glen Allen, Virginia, USA - SEP 25, 2011
Deep amber, slight haze, decent head slowly fades entirely. Aroma strongly of caramel malt, accented by a touch of grapefruit hops. Flavor is caramel malts, what I would consider to be "Maris Otter" character, fruity yeast apparent (also seemingly quite English), and comparatively light use of grapefruit accented bittering hops, sort of like a Centennial. I could be utterly wrong about the ingredients of course, but this is what it invokes. Not bad, but didn’t quite do it for me either. I prefer a cleaner expression of hop flavor in an IIPA.

Matts_Property (830) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - SEP 15, 2011
Bottle split with mcberko. Pours a clear copper/brown with a small white head. Aroma is very sweet, of red berries, caramel, butterscotch, not much hops on the nose. Flavour if herbal, floral, earthy outdoors, leather. Resinous hops, blue cheese, slight coffee hints too or maybe chocolate which is strange. Slightly wood smoke aftertaste, lightly dry, bitter. Odd mix. Can’t decide if it works or not. Maybe the name of the beer describes the attitude towards brewing it!

500mL bottle, split with Matts_Property, pours a clear copper / amber with a small off-white head. Aroma suggest a cloyingly sweet body, with syrup, spicy hops, caramel, a doughy quality and some strange vegetal notes. Flavour is quite on the sweet malty side, with notes of blue cheese and subtle spicy, grapefruity hops. Not the best for this style, but still drinkable.

Dark/hazy amber colour. Decent size off white head. Smells flowers and sweet. Tastes too sweet, blue curacao. Very low carbo, medium body.

mansquito (3906) - Nueva York, New York, USA - SEP 11, 2011
NBD, NY 500ml ($6): Pours a quickly dissipating loose head over a brownish body. Aroma is mostly malty with very subdued hops. As other people have noted, this beer might not be the best traveler, which I find strange because of the high alcohol content and what not. In any case it is not bad; it is just not all that hoppy. Kind of on the sugary side. It has a few very minor ’off’ notes. Some astringecy, and a bit of bitterness. I don’t know if I would have called this a DIPA when drinking it, but oh well. Still drinkable and enjoyable.

Benzai (9548) - Oirschot, THE NETHERLANDS, NETHERLANDS - AUG 31, 2011
Bottle from trade with Tkrjukoff. Shared with DutchDrebus @ home. Hazy dark orange / light red / amber colored beer. Decent off-white head. Smell sweet, lightly flowery-hoppy, but also a little like child’s ’finger-paint’. Can’t explain it completely. Taste is a little disappointing. Way too sweet. Low carbo, low to medium body.

Pours an amberish orange with an off white head. Floral and fruity nose with some caramel malt. Bitter taste with some caramel malt.

marcus (7137) - Sacramento, California, USA - AUG 21, 2011
Bottle from Star Grocery, Berkeley. Pours orange amber with a thin bubbly beige head and a toffee aroma. There is a fruity caramel malt flavor with a sharp bitter finish. This a bit different from most DIPAs - not sticky sweet, there is actually a residual sourness. Very interesting.
