Cask conditioned at Birmingham Beer Festival ’15. Dark brown with cream head. There is a bitterness to this from the off, coffee husk, roasty notes and a hint of spice. It’s okay.

I liked it. No great aroma maybe a slight hint of coffee. Mahogany body with a good cream bead that laces well. But the pleasure is in the drinking. It has a rich fruity sweetness raisins in chocolate and the taste is full and long. A find.

On cask at Three Tuns, Dronfield - Decent looking drink, murky deep reddy brown, solid white head. Nose is mild liquorice, roasted malt and a bit of coffee lurking in the back. Taste is dry, reasonable enough body, nice roasted finish. Quite good to be honest and one that grew on me as it went on.

Cask at Doctor’s Orders in Nottingham. Proper porter as it should be. Akin to the 1687 versions, lacking the body of those classic times obviously, but portery enough.

Cask, The Pub, Leicester. Very dark brown with a beige foam. Aromas are floral and fruity with berries and roast coffee, chocolate with creamy oak and hints of vanilla. Flavours are smooth, oily chocolate with apple and tart lemon. Very lightly roasted coffee with lots of yeasty, gritty notes coming through. Nor great.

On cask at Cheshire Ring, Hyde. Pours black with tan head. Body is a little thin, roasts, liquorice. OK but needs more body.
