Back from a Czech Republic pub-crawl this is part of my express ratings for the “typical” Světlý 11°- (Czech light Pils), Světlý 12°+ (Czech Pils), Polotmavý (Czech Amber Lagers) and Tmavý (Czech Black Lagers). Non-typical beers will receive personalized descriptions after the express ratings.
-------- /> How: Tap at brewpub (Pivovarský Dum, Prague)
The look: Partly cloudy golden yellow body with a short-lived white head
To me a typical Czech Světlý 12° and above is: Well malted body with plenty of biscuits and cereals. Sweetness level is in the light-medium range with some honey flavours and a light caramel presence (3/4 honey, 1/4 caramel). Fruity flavour limited to a light citrus flavour. Medium carbonation. Finish is dry and moderately bitter with a light citric touch. After-taste of dry grassy/herbal hops with a light dry spiciness character.
This one: As above with a bit more citrus/orange flavours. Average.

Unfiltered haze and heaped suds almost like a weissbier. Big piney Saaz aroma once it’s got going. Dunked mealy biscuit and creamy vanilla cushioning the generous hop presence. Sweetly malty but coniferously bitter. At the time, a completely new taste for me... and a good one.

Draught, Dum/Prague. Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly lasting. Body is hazy medium yellow. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), lightly to moderately hoppy (apricot), with a note of pineapple juice. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation. Another one of those sourish fruit-juicy sorts of svetly that I just can’t get into.

Draught at Pivovarsky Dum. Golden with white head, good retention. Aroma is pretty good for a pilsener, faint hops and citrus. Flavor is slightly sweet, of grain with a focused hop note near the end. Good mouthfeel, medium body. A good, refreshing beer.

UPDATED: DEC 24, 2008 Draught at Pivovarsky Dum. Hazy gold with a white head. Yeasty somewhat phenoly aroma with a hint of banana. The flavor is malty and sweet with a nice, flavorful hop balance. Creamy medium body. A little sweet and not very bitter for a pilsner, but the unfiltered mouth-feel is very nice, and the freshness of the flavor makes it pretty good overall.

Draught at the brewpub
Hazy blond color. Light hop aroma. Some malt taste, and a powerful hopping, aromatic. Good, but less characteristic than others in Prague.

Draught at the brewpub: Frsh, light fruity aroma. Yellow, hazy color, creamy white head. Flavor is fresh, light fruity (citrus) and few malty. Light hoppy, herbal. Astringent finish. Very smooh but not very expressive and a bit light.
