Ultra hyped dark beer that doesn't taste like any porter I've tried before. It is bitter and zesty with lots of flavour ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Keg - Founders Brewery Cafe, Nelson. A dark but clear brown with a light tan head with fair retention. Tangy dark fruits, chocolate, liquorice and roasted malt characters. Light to medium body and somewhat light in the mid-palate. Soft carbonation, gently bitter length in the finish. Rounded palate texture.

The head is medium, the body dark brown. It smells darkmalty, aromatic, malty, bit roasty. The taste is darkmalty, bit bitter, flowery, ok.

This has some seriously hard acts to follow from the brews I have enjoyed this evening. Coppery brown in colour with a good finger of cream coloured head. There is a zesty hoppiness that dominates the first organoleptic impression. That and creaming soda (yeuchh!). Ther perfumy herbalness gives way to a lightish body with dandelion, sour fruits, grapefruit among them. It is citric and zesty rather than restrained, elegant and toasty. Not like many porters I have ever tried within memory, certainly. I think it just misses the mark somehow.

6-pack from Pak N Save Petone for $15.99. Pours darkest shade of brown with medium/low carbonation, barely leaving a tan/white head that dissipates quickly. Upfront smell and taste is a hoppier-than-your-usual-Porter with some of the usual suspects of sweet rich roasted malts, but gradually that hoppiness builds to the point that it resembles the bitter and dry finish of an IPA...? Overall good IF you’re stuck between taking a Porter or an IPA home, but you can’t afford to take both.

Draft. Clear maroon color, tan edge head. Aroma of subtle brownies. Taste is chocolate soda.
