2.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 7/20 omega (217) - NEW ZEALAND - JAN 24, 2012
A serviceable black lager that does little to excite the palate, which I find to be thin. Colour is nice and dark, but alas you can’t drink the colour.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 MadIndian (1902) - Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 9, 2012
Dark brown pour. The first thing I noticed was a dominant roasted malt presence. It’s mixed up, although not so well, with chocolate, hops and coffee.
I liked this beer, but the balance was off.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 mkel07 (1811) - Brisbane, AUSTRALIA - JUN 25, 2011
500ml bottle. Pours dark midnight black in clolour and boasts a voluptuous tan head. Looks solid in the glass. Smokey malt aroma as you would expect, a little peaty but pretty good. A touch thin in the mouth but it develops a smokey roast malt flavour on the palate.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 KevBrew (37) - Auckland, NEW ZEALAND - MAY 1, 2011
Light and refreshing with a character greater than the sum of its parts. I’d like to try it on tap to see if the expected coffee and chocolate flavours come out of hiding.

Palate: Thin texture, light to medium bodied, soft carbonation, weak finish with a trace of astringency
Overall: Not a keeper.

Draft at the brewery. Pours dark brown with a medium tan head. Coffee and roasted malt characterize the aroma, with some quiet notes of chocolate and hops. The flavor is more of the same. Light body. Very straightforward and well-balanced.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 DuffMan (4428) - the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, CANADA - JUN 11, 2009
Bottle. Pours a deep dark chestnut brown with a moderate tan head. Nice roasty aroma with notes of treacle, chocolate, and rye. Medium bodied despite the lower ABV with nice flavours of chocolate and bitter roast with a mild ashiness in the dry finish. A terrific schwarz.
2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 nate2g (1548) - Boomtown!, AUSTRALIA - APR 11, 2009
Draught at Founders Brewery, Nelson. Pours dark brown with a medium off-white head. Big coffee aroma with subtle chocolate notes. The flavour is predominately coffee and chocolate. Thin bodied and quite a watery palate with low bitterness. Just falls short for the style.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 Demise (57) - Wellington, NEW ZEALAND - DEC 21, 2008
Tasted fresh on tap at the Founders Brewery and Cafe. Pours Pitch black with thin light tan head. Coffee, caramel and slight malt on the nose. As expected, coffee flavours dominate this smooth beer, with dark chocolate and caramel sweetness taing the edge off the dark malt characters. Slight hop is present with each mouthful, but the malt clearly contributes most to the almost burnt bitterness. Smooth, balanced, and incredibly full-bodied for a dark lager. Well-deserving of its great reputation.
