A Vienna style amber lager. A beautiful copper coloured beer, it is medium in body with a slight sweetness in malt and clean hop bitterness.

Iíd have to disagree with Duff on this beer. I didnít think that it was that great at all. Brownish red colour, malty aroma. A bit of malt flavour at first followed by a harsh bitter finish. It needs a maltier start to balance.

Clear but deep ruby red body with a light beige head. Some rings of lacing and reasonable head retention. Aroma is not the same as the palate cos I get good hop characters in the taste as well as a pleasant note of smoke whereas the aroma is more malty with maybe just a touch of a bushfire. The body is light to medium, a little sweet and a bit of mocha to finish. Wasnít expecting much prior to opening this beer but was pleasantly surprised as the Vienna style is not one of my favourites.

Batch 6920 Merivale New World Tasted 9/12/06. Deep copper brown, stagnant filmy head. No noticable aroma but comes thru as it warms up. Fairly malt mealy type palate but excites a bit more with a bitter toasty finish.

Bottle, a reddish copper with a large frothy head. The aroma combines both rich malt and a hoppy kick. A sweet and earthy malt flavour, toffeeish with a drying finish.

Draught from the brewery. Pours copper/dark orange, off white head. Aromas of spice, malt, and a bit of hop. Flavour has a slight hop bitterness, balanced with a subtle malt sweetness. Some roasted malt character too. Finishes bitter and dry. A refreshing lager on a sunny Nelson day.

Draft at the brewery. Pours a clear amber with an off-white head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, sugar, hops, and roasted malt. Flavor was more of the same, and toasty. Sweet, and a little sticky. This one was the least impressive of the 5 I tried at Founders, but it wasnít bad- just a bit too sweet without offering a whole lot else.

Draught at Founders Brewery, Nelson. Pours reddish brown with a small white head. Aroma of toasted malt and a fair hit of hops. The flavour is toasted malt, coffee and citrus. Thin bodied and low hop bitterness.

Thin head - disappointing. Looks quite good in the glass; dark amber / copper. Attractive nose with big malt and yeasty notes, a touch confectionary like. Palate is a slight let down, no malty or sweet notes evidence despite the nose. Quite sharp, zingy and definately a hop driven style. Canít complain about the refreshing notes but this beer is a tale of two halves, and a confusing on at that.
