3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 williamherbert (1065) - Syracuse, New York, USA - AUG 26, 2009
UPDATED: SEP 2, 2009 Clear and glassy. Deep cherry red. Rose-white head starts strong in a snifter, takes about 5 minutes to melt into a thin film. Medium carbonation. Clear but rich.
The smell is like cola, cinnamon and black licorice. Grape and bitter cherry. It’s complex and quite good.
The taste is lots of spicy cinnamon. Subdued sweet malts. Some sweet toffee and cola flavors. Could use a more bready malt balance. Nutmeg and hazelnut with warmth.
The feel is syrupy and oily smooth; buttery. This beer -- overall -- is a solid, sweet ale. Lots of cinnamon and nutmeg. A nice little winter ale.
Better than the original version (the one called "JW Dundee’s Special Edition")

Amber color with a small head. Very spicy. Lots of spice notes, plus some citrus notes as well. Rich taste.

This beer surprised me. Pours a beatiful amber with a tinge of red. The scent is oaky, malty with some definite spices. Has creamy, malty flavor that finishes with spices and alcohol. On the bad side: could’ve used more spices to mask the alcohol and the palate is a bit filmy. Otherwise, I really enjoyed this.

Bottle from Graziano’s Pizza in Lawrencville, PA. Great pizza and some good beers. This is a very nice winter warmer, maybe just a little too sweet, plenty of spices, light copper color and a modest head

12oz. Pours a darkish amber with light head retention, very clear, some minor lacing on the glass. Very mellow aroma, mostly fruity, little hop aroma. Some banana flavors, followed by malt and no hops. Definite spice flavors but I can’t pinpoint them. Highly carbonated, surges the tongue immediately, with a medium body.

I sniff the bottle as I pop the cap and my nose is greeted by such overwhelming pepper as to make me sneeze! Pour is a beautiful, deep vermillion under a creamy, holding, sandy head. Roasted grains join the aroma with the aforementioned peppery hops and a lick of citrus and processed cheese. Intriguing spiced flavor profile with cinnamon, nutmeg and a bit more pepper over a fruity base of oranges. Sour, nutty notes in the aftertaste. Overall I’m impressed.

Dundee Festive Ale is a very clear, sparkling, amber ale with a huge, pillowy, off white head. It leaves a bunch of festive lacing on the glass. It has just a very slight whiff of soft malt and medicinal herbs. The soft, creamy medium body has a dry, slightly silty finish. There’s some fruity malt that’s a touch sweet, a little bit of spice and a touch of bitterness. Everything’s pretty subdued. It almost seems a little salty. That reminds me of Genny Bock. It’s not really exciting, but it goes down just fine.

Reminds me of Christmas. Smell of spice and malt. Taste of cinnamon. Good winter ale. Not long lasting in the mouth and overall smooth.

This bottle pleasantly surprised me. Poured into a lager glass. Good pour with ample lacing. Subtle and inviting nutmeg early flavor with a good creamy yet moderately light mouthfeel. Clove flavor comes in later and the hoppy finish is also pleasant. Not an everyday drinker but by the fireplace watching snow in the winter, it’s a winner.

Pours transluscent maroon. Spiced, tart malt with perhaps hints of spiced cider. Rich toasty malt flavor with nice, noticeable wintry spices. Rich, surprisingly full mouthfeel, and crisp carbonation. Better than expected, and a pretty nice beer, actually. A good seasonal.
