Nice foamy head with good lacing and dark ruby brown in color. Drinks smoothly but I can’t really tell which spices were used. Slight bitter aftertaste but very clean and drinkable. Can’t really detect an aroma either.

This bottle pleasantly surprised me. Poured into a lager glass. Good pour with ample lacing. Subtle and inviting nutmeg early flavor with a good creamy yet moderately light mouthfeel. Clove flavor comes in later and the hoppy finish is also pleasant. Not an everyday drinker but by the fireplace watching snow in the winter, it’s a winner.

Whoa Nelly let me tell ya bout tis beer, which surpirsed me by about 5 tenths of a point. The label is great. The pour is medium brown with a 2-finger off-white head. The aroma is caramel malt, brown sugar, maple syrup, oats, cinnamon. smooth and crisp and rather complex palate. This one is a keeper

Smells of plantains, almonds and medium roast malt. Color is medium garnet brown with a little lacey hang on. Flavor is balanced malty sweetness with toffee and a slight dull spice maybe due to how old this is, and the carbonation helps this winter beer feel refreshing in July. Lighter bodied but silky. This is like a Bass pale ale but with more going on. Nice beer. Thanks High Falls. 12 oz.

A clear, copper-red pour with a light tan head. The aroma has nutmeg and caramel with very faint cinnamon. The light body has an oily texture with lively carbonation. The taste is malty sweet all the way through.

12 oz bottle. Pours a clear ruby amber red. Nice piny hop character with sweet bready malts. Sweet and warming spices more akin to a christmas cookie than to a hot spice. Solid brew.

12oz bottle from Pick’s poured into a shaker. Pours a clear amber with about a finger of white head. Aroma of caramel, cinnamon and light spices. Taste is the same with some light orange notes. Medium bodied with a thin texture. Lively carbonation and a long finish. Overall, not bad. Especially for 6 bucks per 6 pack.

JW Dundee’s Festive Ale pours an shiny coppery-amber color with a large, fluffy, nearly biege head. Aroma is sweet, malty, and sticky with notes of caramel, apples/fruit, and a hint of vanilla. The flavor is sweet and malty as well with just a hint of cinammon? spice. Slightly dry as it moves into the finish. There is also a lingering mild and spicy bitterness. This beer has a moderate level of carbonation, a medium body, and is smooth on the palate. As it warms, more of the spice comes out and it becomes a little thinner on the palate. The Festive Ale is a good seasonal beer overall and is probably one of JW Dundee’s better offerings

A nice surprise. I guess I didn’t expect much from this beer, but it is actually quite good. Pours a deep red with a tan head. Nice sweet aroma with notes of caramel and maybe cinnamon. Good mouthfeel, heavy like a dark beer should be. Taste is spicy but smooth. Nice aftertaste, maybe some licorice. A good seasonal beer.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Heathen (1243) - Wilmington, Delaware, USA - FEB 28, 2007
THOUGHTS: Bettern than I expected but not a great beer. Nice flavor but a little watery. Some sort of spice was in the flavor but not overdone.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, medium red with a huge, off-white head that mostly lasted and left fair lacing. The aroma was light to moderate caramel malt, light hops and moderate yeast. It was also a little musty with some sort of spice and fruit that I couldn’t put a finger on. The initial flavor was light to moderate sweetness, while the finish was moderate to heavy sweetness and light to moderate bitterness with an average duration. The body was light to medium and seemed like watered-down syrup with fizzy carbonation and a light metallic finish.
