COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally brewed using the Yorkshire square system of fermentation, the nut brown ale calls the North of England home. A hint of hazelnut, a dash of rich caramel and a sprinkle of chocolate malt all intertwine with the flowery bouquet of Willamette hops to produce a round-bodied ale worthy of its homeland. Take a leaf out of our buddy Cyril the red squirrel’s book, and enjoy a Dundee Nut Brown Ale in your own drey. (Drey = a squirrel’s nest. See, you learned something too.)

Dundee Nut Brown Ale from the Dundee Brewing Co. in Rochester NY. This is a pretty standard Brown Ale. Not too cloying or over malted. That is to say that while there are dark malts for the style, they don’t compete as the top flavor. The chocolate malt stays in the background. There doesn’t seem to be any black patent in the bill. Not at all hoppy. The palate is very smooth, making this a nice session brew, even at 5.3% abv. The label claims it has natural hazelnut flavors, but not that I detected.

A brown ale with an off white head. The beer tastes like a brazilian nut coffee with just a hint of hazelnut perhaps in the background. Finishes clean

12oz bottle, from my local Kroger. Clear brown / red color. pours with a 1-finger off-white head. Kinda bubbly, but leaves good spray of lace. Stronger, pronounced carbonation, though smooth overall. No stickiness in the finish. Sweet taste overall, light bitter in the finish. Nutty, toasty flavor. Caramel malts, little chocolate. Very faint hops. Mostly just kind of a plain, watered down, lightly dusty flavor... Not a terrible brown ale, but not really interesting.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark caramel-brown color with a huge fluffy orange-white head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was very faint but semi sweet and tangy with a faint vegetal presence. The flavor was tangy, malty and a touch vegetal with a sour caramel element. Medium length tangy caramel finish. Light to medium body. Blah.

Froma bottle much better than expected. A brown beer with a clean smell. Easy going. Fairly mild and well behaved, unlike other dundees I’m familiar with. Some rope and leather in there but not over the top. Goodly amount of co2. Overall a decent beer experience, btter than expected for this brand.

Bottle. Pours a clear light brown body under a fizzy of-white head that had pretty decent retention. The nose is a little too husky and grainy but there’s some decent light nuttiness and light coffee as well. The flavor is a bit thin with a little too much huskiness as well. A little bit of chocolate and nuttiness, but the huskiness overpowers it too much. Finishes with a grainy note and some lingering caramel sweetness. The body is thin as well with a bit of clinginess on the finish. Not exactly a wonderful example of the style.

This beer is an auburn color with a prominent white head, and the aroma is nutty with a hint of caramel alongside the yeast undertones. The taste is mildly umami and mildly sweet, and the palate of the beer combines a light-medium body, a thin texture, soft carbonation, and an abrupt finish.

Poured into one of my Newcastle Geordie Schooner glasses. Mahogany brown color with a generoud tan head. Aroma is hazelnut and some earthy malt. Flavor is a bit one dimensional, but nutty with a nice level of hazelnut character. Many hazelnut browns seem to overwhelm with the hazelnut flavor, but this strikes a nice balance. Fairly smooth mouthfeel with a slightly dry finish. I rarely see any Dundee beer in my area, so I probably won’t be drinking it again, but its a decent run-of-the-mill brown.
