2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 Elwood (1967) - Leesburg, Virginia, USA - SEP 13, 2009
Serving: 12 oz. bottle.
Appearance: Deep amber color with a large, foamy, light tan head. Decent head retention.
Aroma: Big malty nose with notes of caramel, nuts, and toast. Not to style, but not bad.
Taste: Metallic with weak caramel notes. I should have known better than to expect something good from this bunch. It also has a light bitterness in the back.
Palate: Medium, smooth carbonation with a medium mouthfeel and a short, malty finish.
Overall: A less than mediocre marzen that isn’t worth giving a try.

On tap for growler fills at Half-Time. Pours a clear orange with a medium white head. Smells very sweet, with some faint honey and pear notes. Medium bodied, grainy and cloying. Finishes up with some more grain and a bit of acrid bitterness. Tough to drink, unpleasant.

Dundee Oktoberfest is a crystal clear, sparkling amber beer with an off white film of a head that dissipates and leaves great lacing on the glass. There’s not much aroma to it. It smells a little sweet and pretzely. It has a medium body and a chewy finish that’s a little chalky. It tastes pretzely and mellow. There’s a tiny touch of sweetness that’s well balanced with a green, leafy bitterness. Yup, Oktoberfest.
2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 Butters (3015) - Richmond, Virginia, USA - AUG 28, 2009
Year old bottle actually doesn’t show the age too much. Clear very dark amber pour with orange highlights and a ring of clearish tan head. Nose of sweet raisin and caramel. More caramel in the flavor. A little plastic and bandaid, but not overbearing. Thin and a little metallic on the palate. Not a bad ofest, but don’t think it’d be that much better fresh.
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 williamherbert (1065) - Syracuse, New York, USA - AUG 6, 2009
I really liked this beer....
It’s dark orange. Clear and glassy. Two thick fingers of head. Lots of big carbonation.
Initial musty burst in the aroma. After re-agitating, earthy but sweet molasses malts. Very heavy and sweet butterscotch in the nose.
The taste is sweet and sugary malts. Caramel and molasses. The yeast brings some very heavy butterscotch notes. The malts get somewhat bitter and sit on the tongue. Very good.
Feels dry but also milky. Full-bodied, like the label says. It’s a big, milky autumnal beer. Terrific.
