COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dark and Drinkable. A smooth and classic sweet stout. This dark rich brew is a combination of roasted malts and hops that bring the chocolate and coffee flavors to life.

Let’s say you up and decide to throw a wooden barrel of ale in a public display of manliness (I know, just go with it). How then to celebrate? Hint: You’re holding the answer. That’s right, a Dundee Stout. "Stout" is, after all, what brewers have been calling the darkest, heaviest and "burliest" of their ales since 18th century England. That said, ours is sweet, creamy and ironically, pretty light in texture. So maybe the tough part’s not lifting it after all. The tough part’s putting it down once you have. Go figure.

This stout poured a deep black colour with a big, tan coloured, foamy head. Kind of odd its not creamier. To the nose there are scents of cocoa, wine, light coffee and roasted malt. First sip was slightly creamy with way too much carbonation for a stout. Roasted flavours with hints of cocoa and toast. Finish is smokey with a thin palate.

Bottle; very dark brown color with a lightish head. Aroma of roasted malt, toffee, and caramel. Decent flavor; some lactic elements, some sweetness, caramel with a bit of roast. Didn’t expect much, but this is not bad.

Medium light body, less than most stouts. There are light chocolate and coffee flavors that blend together nicely. It is very drinkable, but somewhat weak for a stout.

otakuden (1783) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - NOV 23, 2013
Appearance: Dark burnt woods with garnet and mahogany highlights along the sides. A fluffy tan head recedes into a thin but solid layer of foam. Swirls with no lace.
Nose: Roast, burnt caramel, black chocolate followed by black chocolate covered raisins and prunes. Cocoa Pebbles and Cocoa Puffs – kind of artificially sweet. Faint cream and vanilla.
Palate: Medium light weight with a disturbingly frothy mouthfeel. Mild roasted notes in the middle with an even milder hint at some chocolate cake. Chocolate covered dark fruits along the sides. Quick hit of char in the back then nothing.
Final Thought: An average stout that while not a drain pour, was easily forgettable. Moving on…

Let me say that I am not usually a fan of these Dundee beers. However, this one exceeded my expectations. Yes, it is very drinkable. A very good example of a good old plain stout. Friendly without any of the ill effects of impy stout. It is so common today to ruin all the styles by trying to make them taste like IPA or impy stouts. Good job on this. Went down with enjoyable ease and had a finish that a mild stout lover would enjoy.

Appearance is medium brown head with black color. Aroma was all sweet malts. Taste was a little bit of chocolate and hints of coffee. Overall not the best stout out there.

Pours a dark brown color with an offwhite head leaving a little lacing. Aromas of chocolate, roased malt and a little licorice. Tastes like a watered down guiness, very watery mouth feel for a stout. Not very good.

Light black pour, small head. Aroma is malted and a bit of chocolate. Taste is watered down chocolate milk. Very thin. Not a good stout.

Strong aroma has a core of roast malt, and an odd but not off-putting fishy note. It pours a chocolate brown with a fairly thick light tan head. Flavor has roast malt and chocolate notes plus a hint of molasses and a snippet of coffee. Texture seems a bit thin for a stout, and not very fizzy. Still, an OK brew.
