500ml Bottle conditioned version, best before Aug 2011, drank and reviewed Nov 2010. Poured into an Abbot Ale tankard, trying to ensure no sediment left the bottle. My second beer from this brewery in my bevy of twelve I’m slowly going through and reviewing.
The beer is a clear reddy brown colour, almost an Irish Red look to it. On top a well formed white head helped to fill the tankard, it looked good. Plenty of lacing and the head stayed the whole distance.
Toffee maltly smells, the sort used on toffee apples to be exact.
Good malty flavour in the initial sip, a sharp hop bitterness reminds you very quickly this isn’t a one trip pony and has more than one taste within.
Well carbonated and well balanced, a very nice beer indeed.

Has a certain musty aroma. Reminds me of apple seeds and celery, not so nice. Nice pale amber colour. Flavour is sweet and fruity at first but changes sharply into a dry bitter finish.

Heavy texture, but has a superb fruity nose that is retained within its taste.

(Cask at Angel, Manchester, 22 July 2009) Reddish amber colour with frothy, beige head. Fruity, malty nose with notes of red berries and toffee. Fruity, malty taste with red berries, dark fruit, caramel and a slightly bittersweet finish with spicy hops. Nice and tasty.

Cask at The Friendship, Fallowfield. Dark amber with rich cream head. Caramel and malt aroma with a distinct lack of hops. Toffee and caramel malty flavour with a decent bitter finish. Well balanced palate but definitely lacks a decent hop character in the mix.

A Mes rate: Gravicask at Pigs Ear. Copper coloured with a very faint white rim. Bland dusty aroma with some slight malt. Spicy and yeasty flavour with a bit of malt and a wisp of light hoppage on the finish. Blah.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 downender (5191) - Bristol, Gloucestershire, ENGLAND - NOV 27, 2007
Cask-conditioned at the Bag O’Nails, Bristol 27/11/07. A deep amber beer with a moderate off-white head. Caramel aroma with a touch of earthy hops. The flavour had a touch of sweet malt before a good bitter finish. Enjoyable.
