Bottle from the York Beer & Wine Shop. Thought I’d try this as it was recenty crowned as champion winter beer of Britain, so I was pretty disappointed when it wasn’t in the best condition, despite being in date. Poured deep ruby with a good thick tan head. It was quite fruity, but with vinegar notes. I could detect coffee in there too. Would like to try again.

Gravity pour at wandsworth common bf. pours a dark brown with an off white head. Aroma has coffee, light smoke and a hint of meat. Light to medium body, light to medium carbonation. Very slightly sour, nice level of carbonation present, with coffee, choc, light treacle, touch of rum and a light fruitiness to it. Tasty. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: APR 21, 2013 Nose is heavy ash, undercut of sweet malts. Little head and little carbination. Taste is not as smokey as the nose would imply, hints of coffee, touch of chocolate. Palate has a nice oily texture. A good example of a porter. Very enjoyable

Sunny, late afternoon in my back garden, decided to review a beer rather than tidy up: this beer is the choosen one! Brown 500ml bottle (bottle conditioned), best before Aug 2011, poured into my Abbot Ale Tankard on 2nd June 2011. Came out in a hurry, didn’t get the glass to it before the lovely tan coloured head began to gush out. Been in the cooloing fridge for about two weeks, not sure why the beer wasn’t stable. Once settled the beer looked great in the sunshine, a reddy brown colour, dark and interesting, the head strong, firm and made up of large bubbles. Roasted malts and burnt brown bread were the two main smells I found, woody nutty notes were there too. The taste followed the nose, malty, slightly burnt feel and those nutty trees again. Well carbonated, as the gushing head proved and very drinkable. Sediment came up with the beer, but it didn’t ruin the flavours or mouthfeel, most likely enhanced it to be honest. Full flavoured and the sort of English Porter you could drink a few of in one session.

Cask at NWAF, 2012. Dark reddish-brown pour with a beige head. Smoky-coffee nose with hints of licorice and brown sugar. Dark roast coffee infusion in the taste with hints of caramel, treacle and vanilla. Very flavoursome. Dry, malty finish. Lovely stuff!

Cask (gravity) - Norwich Beer Festival 2011. Poured with a lasting creamy-bubbly milky tan head and a deep, dark ruddy brown body. Creamy, milky chocolate, roast, berry, slight toffee apple tones & vanilla. Leather, roasted malt, wood & coffee on the palate. A lactic note running throughout. Medium body, creamy bitter finish, soft & smooth palate texture.

Bottle from Carringtons, Chorlton (no wheelies). Dark reddish tinged brown pour with a fast fading tan head. Roasted malt, dark choc and coffee notes present in the nose and a similar yarn flavour wise. Bitter finish. Pre-teeee good.
