SuzyGreenberg (1318), Seattle, Washington, USA Sep 30, 2008 750 ml bottle - 2007 vintage; thanks to beerlando for the trade; pours hazy, light orange with frothy white head; aromas of sour apples, bitter cloves, lemons; very wine-like; drink very, very dry with flavors of lemons, grapes and spice; lots of funk and more spicy than the other 3 during my night of saisons; like the level of funk; very nice satan165 (542), River Grove, Illinois, USA Sep 21, 2008 aroma of lemon and other sunny fruits. yeast comes next, also providing defined clouded yellow body. belgian spice mixes with up front booze profile creating an almost sweet pastry like flavor. this is a bold, ’big beer’ - which is in itself bold departure for a saison, which this certainly is despite some amount of trail blazing in its flavor profile. wonderful head borders on the whipped cream sometimes seen in non-saison belgian ales. while the alcohol makes this slightly less palatable then some others of the famed dupont family, its contribution to complexities cannot be denied. the use of spice and its ABV indeed make this a great holiday brew. BlackForestCO (819), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Sep 19, 2008 I screwed up and accidentally updated a Vieille Provision score with my score for this beer. This was an awesome beer. Poured a hazy yellow color with a thick, dense white head that left some spotty lacing. Aroma of some moderate citrus (orange peel, light lemon), lightly funky barnyard yeast, some soft spices, and a bit of floral hops. Flavor consists of a lightly tart, smooth entry with some hints of wheat and undertones of citrus and a moderate yeasty funk smoothing out into a moderately spicy finish with some undertones of soft fruit and a dry yeastiness. Crisp and dry on the palate, a real treat to drink. Awesome. LyndaNova (492), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA Sep 17, 2008 Cold 750ml corked bottle: Pours a clear, medium golden color with some sediment and a ring of alabaster bubbles. Aroma is of sweet malts, nice yeast, citrus, spice and outdoors. Taste is of sweet malts and subtle earthy hops, orange and spice. Light bodied and crisp with ample carbonation. Ending is malty sweet with notes of spice and alcohol. Ober (1165), Bommelerwaard, Netherlands Sep 17, 2008 A little hazy yellow/orange colored beer, with a nice foamy white head. The aroma of fruits and grassy, sweet malts with some spices. The taste of citrus/orange with some malt and yeast. There are notes of coriander. Good balance. The aftertaste gives a warm feeling. Volgon (2487), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA Sep 14, 2008 750ml: Pours a cloudy dark yellow with some floaties, aroma has oranges, pepper, spicy yeast and cobwebs. Starts and ends lightly sweet with a dry ending. Velvety mouthfeel with mellow carbonation, alcohol is well hidden. gary07734 (391), Tyne & Wear, England Sep 7, 2008 Updated: Dec 9, 2008Murky dirty blonde pour from 375ml bottle. Small, lasting white foamy head. Aroma is grassy hops, wheat and grass with some alcohol. Taste is bitter hops, grass, coriander, slightly sour, warming alcohol and dry finish. Med carbonation and thick mouthfeel. Pretty damn good, even better second time round. Chrism86 (273), Melbourne, Australia Sep 7, 2008 Pours golden orange with surging snow white head. Nose displays yeast spice and earthy hops. Palate is dominated by yeasty spice characters, white pepper and anise in abundance. Some earthy hop presence adds complexity. Finish is dry with significant alcohol driven spice.
Strong links to the vielle provision as expected, obvious to see that this is the winter brew. Classic!
