4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 TAR (2236) - Lafayette, USA - FEB 4, 2005
UPDATED: AUG 22, 2011 2001 vintage: Canary orange. Thin, but caked-on foam layer partially dwindles with each sip. Perfumey wintergreen, clove, cake batter, and honeyed pale malt fragrance. Subdued floral hoppiness. Coating carbonation, but lightly snappy, too. Soft body buttresses the meaty malt onset. Sweetness comes and goes, as candied malts briefly submit to a delectable blend of faint herbal dryness and malt hulls. Feisty yeast yields a plethora of spicy, herbal qualities that equalize the beefy maltiness, as a plentitude of body-bolstering biscuit textures follow suit. Finishes white peppery spicy and less dry than the wintergreen and alcohol suggest, as glazed malts prolong the finish. It surprises me that this hasn’t gained more dryness with age. There’s simply too much residual sweetness, which obstructs much of the subtleties. Nice level of phenols, though. Pretty good stuff.
2011 batch is special. While Dupont always churns out sterling product, there is a lot of year-to-year variance with their beers. This bottling is certainly one of the most estery beers you’ll find, with myriad lustrous delicacies coupled with supreme attenuation in the typical Dupont fashion. Wish they’d ditch the Blanche and make a smaller version of this @ circa 4-5% abv. Fucking lovely.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 mjs (3000) - Helsinki, FINLAND - MAY 25, 2012
(Bottle, 0.75 l - BBE 02/2013, at Pikkulintu, 20120525) The beer poured orange and cloudy. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had honey, grass and malts - like pils with honey. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were sweetness, honey, spices, sourness, grass, malts and bitterness. Aftertaste has grass, spices, honey and bitterness. Quite unlike a saison I would assume a one to be.

Bottled. The honey and malt taste is very noticeable. It has a medium carbonation with a persistent froth. Presence of sedimentation. Dark amber colour. Very good.

2.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 BlackHaddock (1709) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - APR 16, 2012
Brown 25cl bottle, best before 09/2011 drank as my second honey beer (of four) during mid Nov 2010.
Poured into my ’La Chouffe’ tulip, it refused to give me any sort of head, so a still, slightly hazy, golden liquid sat in my glass, looking not too beery.
The smell was mildly of honey, some summery, floral notes too.
The taste was dry, yet with a heavy honey content, I couldn’t take to this beer at all. Strange brew from start to finish. The worst of the four honey beers I reviewed that night.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 Nena (963) - Seattle, Washington, USA - APR 3, 2012
Hazy dark pour with a nice thick layer of white head. Has some meady honey notes on the aroma, slightly spicy and floral note, earthy hay and grass notes. Nice funk to it. Tastes of honey, lightly sweet, surprisingly dry with no noticable alcohol burn. Nice saison complexity with spice, hay, and floral flavors. Very nice.

Aromas of honey and malt...same as taste with a sweet smooth aftertaste, from the honey.
Very balanced beer...
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 peteinSD (629) - San Diego, California, USA - MAR 26, 2012
’10 bottle. Clear, light golden orange pour with a massive froth of a white head. Aroma is clove, honey, esters, a floral spice almost like sage, and dry spice through the finish. Taste is a melange of dry, muffled spices, honey, lavendar, pepper, clove, and a touch of sweetness in the finish. Clean, predominately dry mouthfeel but the yeast character seems to add weight. Wonderful combination of honey and spices. Great beer.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 dreadnord (322) - Castel Volturno, ITALY - MAR 25, 2012
Pours hazy golden orange with a huge fluffy white head. Strong aromas of honey and citrus fruit dominate. bits of sweet pastries and banana start to emerge as it warms and even some earthy pepper aromas as well. Flavor is bittersweet however more on the bitter side with a nice sour kick towards the end before giving way to a bitter finish. Mouthfeel is crisp and clean with a long aftertaste.
