darkguardian (195), Florida, USA Jun 24, 2008 22oz bottle (labeled AVRIL) from Case and Keg, they just got these in. This thing smells very very much like the regular Saison. Funky slight sour nose with some serious hay and spices. Unfortunately this doesn’t stack up to the regular but then again its almost half the ABV. You notice the lack of flavor. This is just lacking balance. It almosts tastes like a Saison IPA (a very weak one). Very bitter on the back end but then again this is supposed to be a palate cleanser. This is pretty watery up front, which is to be expected. Its hard because I keep comparing this to the incredible original but really that the beer is as complex as it is seems to me a minor miracle so I think this is really quite an achievement for what it is. Well done, but I think I’ll stick with the original. Also as the beer warms a bit of a light vanilla caramel aftertaste with some hay creeps in thats very tasty indeed. The carbonation is strong and the finish very dry both to be expected with this beer’s stated purpose.
cmillward (213), Orlando, Florida, USA Oct 13, 2008 Bottle. This pours a hazy blonde with a pillowy white three finger head that leaves streaks of lacing all over the glass. Lemony nose, earthy spiciness, grassy hops, doughy yeast aromas, touch of cloves all over a nice base of toasted maltiness. In flavor, lightly malty, earthy hops, citrus, touch of acidity, peppery nice slightly bitter end. Very light and active, nice carb, a touch of dry in the finish. My notes say, "wow, this is good" but I think this is shorthand for incredibly drinkable and flavorful at under 4%, wow. Cornfield (4343), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA Oct 10, 2008 Rating from a 750ml bottle of Dupont Avril: It pours a slightly hazed yellow body with a sustained, creamy head. There were a bunch of swirlies in the glass that settled out after a while, a bit of a surprize because, if the cork is to believed, this is a 2008 bottle. The aroma was warm bread seasoned with herbs and grasses. Very lively, carbonated mouthfeel. The flavor was pretty reflective of the nose and had the addition of a floral bitterness. Dry finish. Very refreshing and drinkable.
Pat’s Liquors, Porter, IN Oakes (6979), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Oct 8, 2008 Hazy straw colour is pale but vibrant. Spicy dupont aroma is rich with herbal hops. Slightly musty, with lots of sweet bready pale malts and pleasant florals. Spicy, quite well-carbonated and fairly full bodied for its size. Refreshing, lively, and with a wonderfully herbal dry finish. I could drink a lot of this. presario (2447), Calgary, Alberta, Canada Oct 6, 2008 Bottle. Ever lasting light white cloud on dark yellow. Light soft cloudy Belgian wheat and salt scent. Very light soft body and flavour. Soft salty and bready. A soft baby Belgian Saison! Sammy (3141), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 4, 2008 From State Line. A very nice yeasty mildly spicey Belgium, at a low ABV. Very drinkable. This is sometimes called the Avril. Lots and lots of drinkable foam, very nice with lunch. Beige tone, a little farm in the aroma but more or less neutral.Good mouthfeel.
