COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is a beer already brewed in the 1950’s by Dupont Brasseries. As Dupont has extra fermentation capacity now, Olivier has the luxury of crafting some new brews, or re-creating some old specialties. There were two test versions of Monk’s Stout, both at 5.2% abv. One was dry and roasty, and another is said to be a little more rounded. Monk’s Stout is available in 33cl bottles and 20 liter kegs in Belgium.

Pours dark brown with a creamy brown head. Smells of roasty malt, some barnyard funk typical of Dupont. Tastes of roasted malt, some spicy elements and a nice hint of tarteness on the finish.

Dark with tall but unsustainable head. Aroma is yeasty, spicy, fruity with some roasted and coffeeish notes. Typical aroma of belgian beers with some stoutish notes which don’t combine very well in this beer in my opinion. Taste’s dry and has some unpleasant sour notes. Interesting but not my type of beer.

330ml bottle at Congress, Longton. Pours black with tan head. Heavily carbonated and a little thin. Good stout though, with dark fruit and roast.

On tap at Moeder Lambic Fontainas, October 2014. Black with a small tan head. A bit sweet with roasted malt, chocolate, coffee and some dark fruit. The finish was on the bitter side and medium dry. A relaxed and easy to drink one.

330ml bottle served in a tulip glass. A: Pours a deep black color forming a big dark beige to gray bubbled head. Good retention and only few lacings formed and left. However, a very thin layer remains for long on the top S: Very strong on roasted malts. Notes of dark chocolate and coffee. Milky and sweet too. Very "Stout", I mean, reminds Guinness in the nose. Some bready Belgian yeasts that break a bit the main English character. Light flowery hops in the end T: Slightly sweet and roasted malts upfront which turns quickly into a dry and mild bitter in the tongue. Notes of dark chocolate, milk, coffee and brown bread. Belgian yeasts. Finish is mainly made of roasted bitterness and some hops. Not bad M: Light to medium body. A bit creamy. Good carbonation. Aftertaste is bitter and full of roasted malts O: Easy drinking beer but, at the same time, not very attractive. A British style beer made in Belgian. That’s perhaps the most interesting point about this beer [ BA Review @ 11/28/2012 ]

Bottle. Medium brown with a brief beige head. Very yeasty profile, not much roast at all; estery, dark fruits. Not my kind of thing, at least stout-wise. At all.

Bottle. Fruity, yeasty, chocolaty and a bit spicy. Semi dry. Porteresque. High drinkability.

Pörkölt maláta sugárzik illatából, száraz ízei pedig tovább nyújtják a pirított benyomásokat, melyekhez aztán egy óvatos kékszőlős, mazsolás árnyalat is csatlakozik idővel. Érdekes, hogy a belga jelleg szinte teljes mértékben felülíródik az egyébként minden tekintetben kiváló italban.

33cl bottle. Dark brown colour with a tan head. Chocolate, roasted, coffee, malt and spices in the aroma. Average to soft carbonation and medium to full body. Taste is medium low sweet and medium low bitter, with some spicy notes. Overall, an interesting brew.
