COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is a beer already brewed in the 1950’s by Dupont Brasseries. As Dupont has extra fermentation capacity now, Olivier has the luxury of crafting some new brews, or re-creating some old specialties. There were two test versions of Monk’s Stout, both at 5.2% abv. One was dry and roasty, and another is said to be a little more rounded. Monk’s Stout is available in 33cl bottles and 20 liter kegs in Belgium.

Bottle from American Beer. Dark brown with lasting tan head. Nice fresh aroma with hints of roasted coffee and chocolate chip cookies and grassy hops. Very dry subdued dark fruit (okay too cold...to be continued in a few minutes). Okay, warmed up a little, but still nice chilled. Very dry roasty some very mind fruity tartness dry coffee yeast estery exhale. Really a session stout saison. Light refreshing body and effervescence and esters. Unique and near perfect. I am chugging it. Frigging excellent.

P: Almost pitch black body with a tan micro bubble head. S: Sweet milk chocolate, molasses, fig pudding, burnt barley and fruit roll ups. T/M: Chocolate, stale coffee, and sweet dark fruit jam. Oddly present tartness, cherry cola, burnt molasses, burnt barley and finishes dry with long lingering cigar smoke coverage. Body is more light and carbonated than expected. O: Tartness is really throwing this off. The aroma is very nice and well blended. I could smell this for hours. For the price tag this is not something I would ever purchase again but I enjoyed the experience.

Single from the LCBO, with a best before date of 08/2014. Pours a dark brown colour with ruby highlights, showing lots of tiny particles floating around. Frothy beige head, fizzing away slowly, with foamy lace sticking around. Belgian Ale yeast aromas, with mild spicy hops and notes of dark fruits. Oh wow ! What a weird taste. Seems to be all over the place, except in the stout world. Some sourness (but does not seem infected), some yeast, a little tart, some fruits and to save this, watery roasted malts and hints of coffee in the end. Not one I would have again.

33cl bottle from LCBO. Dark brown with a ruby hue, ay first a light brown head but fades to nothing. Roasted malt, some raisin, caramelized brown sugar. Mild+ body and moderate carbonation, some anise and plum, roasted malt, bit of molasses, somewhat bitter.

Bottle from the Dupont LCBO feature. Body looks like a nitro black. Faint roastiness, more molasses taste. A weaker stout for sure. So-so drinkability, and dare I say a little thin.

On tap at Moeder Lambic Fontainas, pours black / dark brown with a medium tan head. Aroma of very dry oats, and dry bready malt. Flavour is subtle but bland, with notes of dry oats, bitter dry chocolate and some bready malt. Very dry and bready palate, full of oats. Kind of bland, but very pleasant. Solid stuff.

Part of the Spring 2013 LCBO Dupont feature. The beer pours a translucent reddish-brown (when held to light) and a creamy brown head that quickly dissipated into a ring. Aroma is roasted malt, yeast, and burnt wood. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, but thin for a stout and carbonation is average. Flavour is tart and funky with some roasted malty notes, yeast, and maybe watered down coffee. A stout in name only. In the overall pantheon of beers, this is above average. In the overall pantheon of stouts, this is below average.

Deep black pour with a thick tan head. The aroma has a touch of roast and a fairly pronounced plummy sweetness. A little bit of licorice and some soft bitterness on the finish. Fairly dry on the palate with a bit of cocoa and roast. A moderate bit of tartness on the back but that is quite restrained. Interesting brew.

Found randomly in the Imperalist Dictatorship of the Republic of Ontario. Has a perfect black body and light brown-ash head on top, fits perfectly into a tulip pint glass. Very soft aroma of watery barley however. Flavour is a slightly spiced barley with not complexity and a bitter finish. This one started so well and ended so badly. Not a very good brew.

Dark brown/black. Some yeast sediment. Head lacing along the rim of the glass. Aroma: Dry roastyness. Taste: Dry smokiness - almost acrid, but not at all unpleasant. There is almost no detectable sugar left here. Thinnish body and dry, clean finish. The smokiness is the most upfront flavour here, but there is also some tart raspberry and plum notes. A faint grassiness and bitterness from the hops remains.

330ml bottle. Dark brown body, small mocha head with good retention, noticeable sedimentation. Aroma is bready, with a good dose of yeast and caramel, roasted malt, roasted hazelnuts. Taste is dry and smoky: prunes, roasted malt, dark berries, some yeast. Lively carbonated. Unusual stout.
