COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is a beer already brewed in the 1950’s by Dupont Brasseries. As Dupont has extra fermentation capacity now, Olivier has the luxury of crafting some new brews, or re-creating some old specialties. There were two test versions of Monk’s Stout, both at 5.2% abv. One was dry and roasty, and another is said to be a little more rounded. Monk’s Stout is available in 33cl bottles and 20 liter kegs in Belgium.

Corked bottle and served in Duvel snifter: Pours a medium brown hue with a frothy beige head and left excellent lace upon the glass. In fact I would go as far as to say it maybe a tad over-carbonated. Lovely roast and toasted malt nose with a hint of smoke, oak, leather, tobacco and even some dark syrup. The taste well overly complex does not bore either... again the dark malts add a lovely roasted character to this brew. Minimal Belgian yeast character but you do find a touch of spice and earthiness around. The finish is ashy and dry with just a kick of noble hop bitterness and some coffee like tones. The mouth feel is smooth and easy going once the initial carbonation as died down. Overall, I found this exceeded my expectations and luckily has no weird sourness found in many Belgian stouts. Simple, to the point and almost sessionable.... even at 9 dollars I would gladly buy again.

Aroma: soft vineus, woody earthy aroma, hint of fig and clove. Fruity backing. 7+
Look: clear dark brown with creamy lighter dark beige cap.
Taste and palate: medium bodied. Highly phenolic. Ripe fruit with smoke with soft rounded base. Slight tartness. Quiet unusual. This would go nice with late night get together.

Bottle. Pours black with a cream colour reach head which disappears immediately. No lacing. Aroma of cola, molasses, dark fruit, dark grains. Taste of chocolate, light coffee sweet dark fruits. More carbonation than needed. Body lighter than used for a stout. An unexpectedly thirst quenching thin stout

A very pleasant stout, in 330ml bottle. Pours a very dark brown-red, with a thick yellow-brown creamy head that subsides quickly. Good lacing. Roasted malt, smoky aroma with hints of coffee and chocolate. A little tart in taste, with distinctive, lingering roasted malt and coffee mouthfeel. Very drinkable.

glennmastrange (1907) - hobe sound, Florida, USA - MAY 21, 2013
Bottle. Moderate toasted and mild coffee for the malt, light resin for the hops, moderate dough for the yeast, with hints of wood, brown sugar and cola. Head is large, frothy turning rocky, tan with excellent lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is very dark brown. Flavor starts moderately acidic, then finishes lightly to moderately acidic and moderately bitter. Palate is light to medium, watery with a fizzy carbonation. Bland, flat and a little too fizzy for a Stout, but it does lighten up a bit making it drinkable.

Dejlig stout. Som en stout bør være. Tilpas sødme, bitterhed, tør. Ikke nogen svinkeærinder i andre retninger end det som det drejer sig om. Muligvis derfor en lidt kort eftersmag men den gør den velegnet som "referencestout". ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

P: Almost pitch black body with a tan micro bubble head. S: Sweet milk chocolate, molasses, fig pudding, burnt barley and fruit roll ups. T/M: Chocolate, stale coffee, and sweet dark fruit jam. Oddly present tartness, cherry cola, burnt molasses, burnt barley and finishes dry with long lingering cigar smoke coverage. Body is more light and carbonated than expected. O: Tartness is really throwing this off. The aroma is very nice and well blended. I could smell this for hours. For the price tag this is not something I would ever purchase again but I enjoyed the experience.

Single from the LCBO, with a best before date of 08/2014. Pours a dark brown colour with ruby highlights, showing lots of tiny particles floating around. Frothy beige head, fizzing away slowly, with foamy lace sticking around. Belgian Ale yeast aromas, with mild spicy hops and notes of dark fruits. Oh wow ! What a weird taste. Seems to be all over the place, except in the stout world. Some sourness (but does not seem infected), some yeast, a little tart, some fruits and to save this, watery roasted malts and hints of coffee in the end. Not one I would have again.
