This is a beer already brewed in the 1950’s by Dupont Brasseries. As Dupont has extra fermentation capacity now, Olivier has the luxury of crafting some new brews, or re-creating some old specialties.There were two test versions of Monk’s Stout, both at 5.2% abv. One was dry and roasty, and another is said to be a little more rounded. Monk’s Stout is available in 33cl bottles and 20 liter kegs in Belgium.

Bottle at Delirium Hoppy Loft on 12th November 2012. Virtually black with a light tan head and spot lacing. Rich roast coffee aroma, with smokiness in background. Delectable roasts in mouth; cigar smoke and coffee. Roasty finish with smoke and delicate citrus. Zingy mouthfeel, a little less body than expected for a 5.2 stout, nevertheless full of flavour. I have taken into account how much better it would taste if NOT served at fridge temperature - it would do well at around 15C.

Bouteille avec un BB de 03/2017, semble avoir été embouteillée en 2015 (mars sûrement) donc vieillie 14 mois. Robe noire surmontée d’un gigantesque col de mousse beige onctueux qui ne cesse de grossir. Après un repos de 5 min, celui-ci se calme et laisse une épaisse dentelle. Arômes de malt grillé, eau citronnée, houblon gazonné, jus d’orange congelé trop dilué, un brin chocolaté. C’est très moyen, ça semble fade. En bouche, les craintes se réalisent. C’est effectivement fade. C’est surtout le mélange citron-orange-gazon qui domine (pour un stout, c’est spécial), un peu de malt et noisettes grillés, café, chocolat, terre. Finale brève et aqueuse. Texture légère et minérale, corps mince. Trop facile à boire pour un stout qui semblait à première vue être onctueuse. Grosse déception.

Bottle. Pitch black with with a lasting foamy light beige head. Aroma is roasted, coffee, nuts, caramel, dark fruits. Taste is of figs, blackcurrant, nuts, hint of spice, coffee. Light oily mouthfeel, medium carbonation.

Aroma: roasted malts and caramel, ashy. Appearance: deep brown color and beige head. Taste: low bitterness, ashy, roasted caramel, clear profile, dry. Palate: low body and medium carbonation, ashy finish. Overall: It tastes like a schwarzbier, so something went wrong.

Red, clear yellow foam. Mild sour, hay, wet wool in the aroma. Sweet, brown sugar, with sweet really mildly burned aftertaste. High in carbon.

Bottle shared by Marduk, thanks! BB 2017. Pours brown with tan head. Not without the promised coffee and chocolate characteristics, also nutty, but it’s unfortunately rather ashy too, plus what I’d describe as metallic and earthy... On the palate it’s a bit too watery, and the carbonation is basically flat. I don’t know, I don’t think I’d want to finish the whole bottle.

330ml bottle (Alus Tirgus, Bergi). Very dark brown color. Huge size, tan head, stays. Metallic, yeast, faint roast, sweet and nutty in aroma. Nutty roast, spicy, ashy, bit of tobacco in taste. Herbal hops and ashy in aftertaste. Maybe some smoked peat too. Medium body. Soft fizz and quite easy to drink.

Brown liquid. Thin layer of white froth. Coffee, caramel and hints of smoke in the aroma. Smoky beginning. Hints of coffee and caramel. Bit watery in the end. Coffeebeans and smoke again. Rather medium bodied, low carbonated beer. At first seemed too smoky. But not enough body for the stout.

Bottle shared by Marduk. Brown beer, tan head. Nose is coffee, mild chocolate, lactic notes, cocoa dust. Flavor is slightly ashy, tobacco notes, chocolate, cocoa, chocolate. Bitter coffee finish, more ash. Like liking an ashtray. A thin ashtray.

F: average, creamy, good retention. C: dark, non-transparent. A: roasted malt, light coffee, cacao, light lactic, chocolate, hint of fruity. T: roasted malt, coffee, earthy bitterness, cocoa, light chocolate, quite dry finish, hint of dark fruits, medium to medium full body, lower carbonation, yeast, light peppery, slightly above average stuff, 0,33l bottle from De Caigny near Essen.
