KyotoLefty (8121) - Kyoto, JAPAN - SEP 15, 2011
UPDATED: SEP 11, 2013 Bottle at ABC. Full, malty nose, a touch of grassy hop, but more like an Export than a pils. Bready, with a touch of lemon. Clear golden with a low lacy head. More hops come through in the mouth for sure, some slightly strange lemon, hay, plus a very bitter finish. All along, bready malts. Thick and malty. The balance is pretty decent, to be sure, but this still fails to excite me. The flavor is a bit too muddy for a pils. Still, nicely hoppy and drinkable. Better than when I had it on tap.

Draught at Toronado, Sept. 2011. Medium yellow-gold with lace. Grainy aroma, with hay, cereals, very malty. Rich cereal malt flavor as well, with grains, light hops, hay, ok bitterness. Rather heavy. Sweet and worty—rather under-attenuated, it seems. A huge disappointment from one of my favorite brewers. 6/2/7/3/13

Draft. Golden-straw colored beer with an off-white head. Mineral and light fruity aroma with light malt. Light fruity and malt flavor with light grain and light mineral notes. Medium bodied. Malt and light mineral lingers with light fruitiness.

A hazed pale golden pils with a thick white head. In aroma, a grainy malt, mineral and grassy. In mouth, a nice grainy malt with light German czech hops, caramel malt, biscuitty, not bad. On tap at Nuetnigehough, July 13, 2011.

On tap at the Toronado. Pours with a clear golden body with a small but lasting white head with great lace. Aromas are bready, quite sweet, malty, grainy, perfume, floral, light lavender. Taste has a fruit note (I cannot tell if it is ester or hop driven), lavender, ripe plums, tea, grainy and bready. Overall a bit sweet. Lively bubble. Doesn’t feel like a classic pils, but is a tasty beer.

Tasted on 7/31/11 on draft at Bangers and Lace. Pours a very clear pale golden with an average white head that slowly recedes to a thin collar of lace. The nose is malty with cereal and hay, along with a bit of earthy yeast aroma, and peppery noble hops. The flavor is the same, lightly sweet up front, moving to the earthy yeast and spicy noble hops. The body is light with average, but stinging, carbonation, and a long spicy noble hops finish.

Draft at Les Caves Dupont. Bright golden color. Aroma of black pepper and dusty hay. Taste is refreshing and not too bitter.

Transparent hay gold, thin creamy white head, small bubbled. Creamy nose of grass, light dough, grains gives way to flavors including honey, crust, more grains, and again some grass. A bit cheesy but the zesty carbonation keeps it lively despite the sweeter, malt-driven flavor.

Draft sample at Dutch’s. Pours a clear golden color with a medium sized white head. The aroma had bready malts with a pilsner fingerprint and some floral and citrus hops. The flavor was pilsner malt, bread, some light citrus and soapy floral notes. There was nothing overly special about this beer.

On tap at Deep Ellum - Allston, MA. Light pils malt nose. Flavors are super soft and gentle. I was really surprised to find a lack of snappiness in this pils. It seemed like a completely different water profile shone through the subtlety of the style. Soft, almost soapy, but with a nice clean fresh pils malt flavor.

Draft. Pours gold with a white head. Grainy lagery aroma with light floral notes. The flavor is grainy and a bit wheaty, with some light sweetness. Not bad.
