COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Spéciale Belge is Brasserie Dupont’s first collaboration in its 166 year history.  Spéciale Belge is the featured beer of Philly Beer Week, and will debut during the Opening Ceremonies at Independence Hall on June 1, 2012 in the presence of Mayor Nutter.  Doing the honors of tapping will be Iron Hill Brewer Chris LaPierre – fitting since they are the collaborators on this beer.  All Iron Hill locations (Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania) will be pouring Spéciale Belge throughout June.

Draught Very dense, good amberish head over hazy copper-amber beer. Woody, touches of lactic acid, undergrowth, fresh bread aromas. Old wood, bit dusty, cumin and dulled, diluted caramel. Very light MF, despite a certain slickness. Interesting. Good, and even when it is not at all my idea of a Speciale Belge, it’s certainly worth trying.

Sampled draft @ ZBF 2013. Intended for export usually apparently – nice to get to try this one too. Hazy orange caramel appearance with a fading white head. Nose is sweet malts, caramel, touch rye and all-grain bread, somewhat herbal with spices, fruity, interesting & different. Taste is bitter herbal, rye & all-grain bread, caramel, thick malts, hint sweet liquorish, spices, even a hint of soy sauce, quite bitter EU hops, lightly fruity. Creamy body. Very, different and special indeed, glad to have tried this one.

Clear orange to light amber beer, big solid creamy off-white head, pretty stable, adhesive, nice lacing. Aroma: sweet malts, caramel, yeast, bit smoky, some toast, citrus, bit of honey, fruity, solvents. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: malty start, grains, bit of caramel, pretty fruity, hay, bit smoky, pretty bitter, hoppy, some dairy. Aftertaste: definitely some smoke now, citrus, grassy hops, toast, fruity, bitter hops, dry ending.

Bottle @ home, picked up at Wilbur’s Fort Collins. Pours a clear rust orange appearance with a creamy light brown head. Orange blossom, potpourri floral, somewhat citrusy, a bit funky, herbal, enticing aroma. Soft mouth feel. Begins a fairly citrusy, sweet malty taste and finishes with a dry, fairly herbal, nutty, husky malty finish. A lot more herbal and toasted malty characters than many of Dupont’s offering and it is quite tasty.

Pours light golden with a copious frothy white head. Smells of belgian yeast and light fruity esters. Taste is bitter with light pear and apple with good carbonation and the belgian yeast dancing on the finish. Not my style but pretty good.
