COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Spéciale Belge is Brasserie Dupont’s first collaboration in its 166 year history.  Spéciale Belge is the featured beer of Philly Beer Week, and will debut during the Opening Ceremonies at Independence Hall on June 1, 2012 in the presence of Mayor Nutter.  Doing the honors of tapping will be Iron Hill Brewer Chris LaPierre – fitting since they are the collaborators on this beer.  All Iron Hill locations (Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania) will be pouring Spéciale Belge throughout June.

Hazy amber with a small white head. Malty aroma of bread and toffee. Malty sweet flavour. Boring and inoffensive as the style should be.

750 c&c from Bine & Vine. Pours dark hazy orange/amber with a creamy off-white head. Aroma is citrus, yeast/spice,arguably banana ester, some earthy hop, and barely detectable roast malt. A sort of light brettiness also. Maybe that’s part of the earthy. Med body/foamy carb. Flavor is a bit muddied. Earthy hop/malt with some yeast/spice. The hint of sour didn’t pan out. Maybe slightly tart citrus. Still, it’s a bit earthy, somewhat fruity, and it drinks pretty well. Can’t see why the aroma doesn’t coincide more with the flavor.

Draft at Eulogy, courtesy of kkearn, thank you sir. Flew up to Philly just for this beer. From Idaho. Hazy golden color, tiny white head. Arona is typical of the Dupont teroir, with dusty and sour banana bubblegum. Taste is barnyard dust, animal parts and hay. Delicious.

Bottle @ home, picked up at Wilbur’s Fort Collins. Pours a clear rust orange appearance with a creamy light brown head. Orange blossom, potpourri floral, somewhat citrusy, a bit funky, herbal, enticing aroma. Soft mouth feel. Begins a fairly citrusy, sweet malty taste and finishes with a dry, fairly herbal, nutty, husky malty finish. A lot more herbal and toasted malty characters than many of Dupont’s offering and it is quite tasty.

Tap at Beachwood BBQ Seal Beach. Pours a clear tea orange with thicker yellow foam. Nose is heavy sweet cherries and sweet specialty malt. Taste follows suit with some medicinal syrupy quality. Tannic apple skin heavy. This is a Dupont beer? Geez. Well they make Redor Pils.
