COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle conditioned; has sometimes been available in the cask.
This barley wine is golden in colour with a luscious malty body. A complex blend of hops give an interesting depth and balancing bitterness. The finish lingers with a rich warmth. Something very special. Smooth deep malt blends with bright hop flavours. A hint of pear drops come from higher alcohols.

Bottle. Pours hazy light amber with a fluffy head. Aroma is fruity, bready, light hops. Rich malt, biscuit, bread, and alcohol flavors finish with a nice warming note.

Bottle (from Bottles York). Sweet fruity malt but not overly so, you could almost take it for a strong bitter if it wasnt for the hint of almondy alcohol trying to get you to notice it. But on the whole its well balanced with gentle hops in the finish. I was pleasantly suprised but not impressed.

Cask conditioned at Harbury Beer Fest ’07. Deep gold with white head. Heavy sweet winey fruity beer, smooth but with heavy strokes of cough medicine about it. Tongue stripping alcohol in the cask, could be one where the bottled is better.

A Mes rate: Bottle from the Bottle Shop in Bramhall. Was hoping this would be good and it most certainly is. Orval like colour with a good white head and a luxurious consitency. Beautiful smelling beer. Malt, yeast glorious amyl nitrate like alcohol and some delicate hops and caramel in the background. Flavour is a really mellow (in comparison to others of this style) drinkable barley wine. Barley is offset by some nice grassy hops, almost perfumey at points. Alcohol is clearly there but just adds a bit of warmth at the edges and a slight spike at the finish. Pronounced bitterness at the end with clear toffee. Great body, really good balance, like it a lot.

My bottle shared with HogTownHarry and tupalev. Pours a hazy orange with little floaties and a large lasting white head. Sweet aroma with lots of fruit, sweet malt, yeast and a good amount of hops. Flavour’s malty and fruity with a somewhat bitter finish. Alcohol’s well hidden. Medium to full bodied. Very good, I really enjoyed it.

500 ml bottle, bought in Scarborough. Bottle conditioned. ABV is 8.4%. Deep golden colour, huge head. Lovely aroma of hops, orange and oak. The flavour is hoppy and fairly sweet, notes of bitter oranges and spices, the alcohol is noticeable. Bitter finish and aftertaste. Must be a great accompaniment with mature cheeses. Nearly too powerful on its own.

Bottle shared with Hogtown Harry and Blankboy, blankboy’s bottle from England. Nice dark golden hue, small thin white head. Good dry yeast aroma with some sweet malt. Taste is that of a nice strong bitter - very earthy/Uk like. Straightforward, simple and decent.

Bottle (500ml). Shared with blankboy and tupalev, blankboy’s bottle from England. Deep cloudy gold/amber, tiny black floaties, large lasting frothy white head. Dry aroma, peppery yeast, wheat, alcohol and a little cereal character. Taste - very nice, very smooth and balanced, soft; grainy malt, hints of apple and other fruits, herbal hops and lots of em. Soft, average body, mild carbonation, somewhat astringent, mild malt body that lasts a good long time. Well done.

courtesy of Papsoe - cloudy dark orange colour, very little foam; robust flowery hoppiness with notes of honey and caramel; full malt body supported by a fair carbonation; finishes bitter sweet with a long malty, caramelish hoppy finish - beautiful

I really quite enjoyed this, moreso than most barley wines I’ve tried. I think this mostly is a testament to this beer’s balance, as I’m averse to the cloying representations of the style so prevalent in the States. Cloudy light amber with little to no head, a bit of white big-bubbled scum on the sides of the glass. Aroma is sweet caramel and lightly burnt sugars, light pit fruits and a touch of orange, loads of fresh apples, a bit of grain and honeyed sweetness. First waft reminded me of a good Belgian, interestingly. Taste, like mentioned, is balanced - nothing stands out but everything melds together quite perfectly. No real perception of alcohol. Toffee and caramel notes, with a fruity sweetness in apricots and oranges and orange rind. A pleasing lightly bitter sweetness at the back of the palate in the finish, with a mildly sweet and nicely hop-accentuated grassy aftertaste. Slightly rasping effect on the tongue. Not nearly as thick as some barley wines, which is sad, but good nonetheless, with significant carbonation. Really, really well done.
