COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle conditioned; has sometimes been available in the cask.
This barley wine is golden in colour with a luscious malty body. A complex blend of hops give an interesting depth and balancing bitterness. The finish lingers with a rich warmth. Something very special. Smooth deep malt blends with bright hop flavours. A hint of pear drops come from higher alcohols.

Bottled. Amber colour, small head. Grapefruit and toffee up front. Sweet and full bodied. The complex flavour includes caramel, grass and peat, as well as some licorce in the finish. Medium bitterness. Well balanced.

slightly alcoholic nose with hints of orange and cardemom. Beautiful orange colour with a milky shine. Low head. A bit watery feeling with a fruity finish and palate. Aftertaste of somewhat bitter like orange shells...

A pleasant strongly alcoholic barley wine.Nice complex tastes but you are not allowed to forget its strength. An excellent winter warmer.

The aroma is wonderful, sweet caramel, malt, and yeast. The color is amber and it has a beutiful long lasting light brown head. The flavor is strong with notes of caramel, wood, alcohol, and berries. For me the alcohol is too present. But it is still a very nice beer.

Barley wines are not really my thing, but this was a very good example. Lots of malt and fruit - apples and oranges -, but a good balancing acidity too and not too chewy. Handpump, Head of Steam, London NW1

UPDATED: SEP 30, 2011 June, 2003 Bottle conditioned. A smooth barley wine with some nice dry sherry soaked oranges. Well behaved. A little smoky in places. Good, but not outstanding. [2.9]
Sept, 2011 Bottle from Edinburgh Woollen Mill shop in Durham. Lovely. There’s a whiff of vinegar and paint stripper on the top, which adds interest to the smooth, malt accented sweetness. This is an easy drinking strong beer. Good toffee and caramel body - positive awareness of alcohol which swirls all over the place. This is a seductive and intoxicating beer. It’s pretty much what you hope and expect a good barley wine to be. Yes. Lovely. [3.8]

Beautiful color, a hazy ruby amber topped by a huge head. Some puke aroma, pepper, then malt and iron; not inviting. Things get better with the taste; it has a bit too much carbonation, a strong caramel flavor, the mouthfeel is a bit dryer (and sharper) than expected, no sweetness, and it has a very strong bitterness. It’s an average English Strong Ale, not a Barley Wine.

Hazy amber color, immense head, rocky; beautiful lace. Very nice hop aroma, herbal; turning into some fruity sensation. Good mouth, still quite sweet, malty, some caramel. Balanced final, quite long and dry.

Brown cloudy looking beer, with a very sweet alcohol aroma. The flavour is malty with a slight liquorice aftertaste. A good beer, better than most barley wines.

Aromas are light and sweet with alcohol vapours. This is a, shall we say, relaxing beer that is smooth for its percentage and without much bitterness. Light and fruity for its strength. Far better than the malt-liquour rubbish.

Bottle conditioned. Orange bronze, good head and condition. Spicy malt nose with hints of fruit on a wave of alcohol. Mainly malty body with some apple notes and more alcohol, and a finish that becomes dry and bitter.
