3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Huge fluffy yellowish head, stable, over unclear orange beer with olive shine. Toasted, caramel nose, parsley, herbal-based liqueurs. Very liqueurish taste; syrup, alcohol & herbal bitterness. Very creamy MF from the head. Well-carbonated, slick & warming. Alcoholsweetness wars with the burning-bitterish throatfeel. Only medium bodied, all the same. Absolutely not bad, but for it to grapple with the big Belgian abbey ales, might be a bridge too far. Big thanks to Darren!

4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle 07-03-06 picked up at House of Fraser Birmingham. Cask Conditioned at Dudley Winter Alse Festival Nov 19th 2005. This has been a belter on both occasions I have had it though just a tiny bit better in cask format. Warm orangey brown colour, barely much of a head, this is a sweet and very fullsome barley wine dangerously drinkable, excellent.

0.5 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 1/20
Bottle. Pours a lifeless, dead honey gold, no head, no carbo. Bad sign... aroma is low apple fruit and grain. Palate is flat, no carbo, and is totally OFF. Bummer.

Amber colour, unclear, sediment. Lasting offwhite head. Floral and real nice aroma, flavor is nice, medium malty. The 8,4 abv isnt unpleasent, but warming.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Barley wines are not really my thing, but this was a very good example. Lots of malt and fruit - apples and oranges -, but a good balancing acidity too and not too chewy. Handpump, Head of Steam, London NW1

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
A Mes rate:
Bottle from the Bottle Shop in Bramhall. Was hoping this would be good and it most certainly is. Orval like colour with a good white head and a luxurious consitency. Beautiful smelling beer. Malt, yeast glorious amyl nitrate like alcohol and some delicate hops and caramel in the background. Flavour is a really mellow (in comparison to others of this style) drinkable barley wine. Barley is offset by some nice grassy hops, almost perfumey at points. Alcohol is clearly there but just adds a bit of warmth at the edges and a slight spike at the finish. Pronounced bitterness at the end with clear toffee. Great body, really good balance, like it a lot.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Cask conditioned at the Royal Oak, Bath 21/2/08. Amber coloured with a moderate white head. Sweet malt and earthy hop aroma. Flavour of barley sugar, yeast and grassy hops. Good, although slightly lacking in character for such a strong beer.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
(Bottle, Monk’s Café, Stockholm) Amber colour, hazy, with huge, but brief, off-white head. Fruity nose with citrus (orange, mandarin) and heavy notes of earthy hops, slightly vinous. Fruity taste, slightly vinous, with notes of orange marmalade, mandarin and earthy hops in the finish. Sweetish, but perfectly balanced. Very nice.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Medium offwhite head. Clear brown body. Sugary caramelly aroma
with spicy cocos and raisins notes. Sweet, and faintly dry,
cocos and alcohol taste with spicy grape notes. Full-bodied.
Mild, slightly hot mouthfeel. Sweet-dry caramelly toffee and
alcohol aftertaste with spicy cocos notes. Interesting and
drinkable, but could hide the alcohol better. (0.5l bottle, from
House of Trembling Madness, York.)

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
500. Pours a murky medium amber with no real head or lace, just little white wisps. Toffee, sweet cream, and a bit of apple skin on the nose. Creamy medium body. Toffee, sweet cream, and apples again on the mid palate. Mild caramel finish. Not much happening here.
