Cask Days 2009 @ Bar Volo, Toronto, ON: Pours almost black, as it should, and a surprisingly nice tan head. Roast malts and caramel play off a pleasant sweet aroma. All of it comes through in the taste with great caramel, roasty malts. Surprisingly not very bitter considering it holds a high IBU rating but one of the best of the fest for sure.

Cask at Bar Volo Cask Days 2009. Nice redish ambar colour with noticeable tan head. Sweet malt and slight hop bitter aroma. Very nice malty and coffee/chocolate flavour with hop bitter as well.

Cask. At Volo Cask Days 2009. Clear deep ruby-black with a large lasting off-white head. Aroma of burnt caramel and tons of dry herbal bitterness - simple, solid. Taste - hugely dry and bitter, with some dry cocoa roastiness - very hoppy, very good! Sticky and slightly chewy mouthfeel, with a long, extremely dry finish. Like a hopped-up and dry-hopped schwarzbier - really, really good.

On cask at Volo Cask days: Appearance: Blackcurrant red, small white head. Aroma: Shoe polish, rye bread, hops, grass and some raspberry. Flavour: Malt at first, followed by tartness, rye bread, toast and a long bitter hop finish.

C’est What? CASK - Rich dry and showing nice rounded coffee. Very dark brown color. Smells lightly roasty and a little smoky. I get more the dryness of the hop than the hop character, must re-try... drinks well enough!

[2573-20091031] Cask. Powder fruit roasted malt aroma. Dark brown black body with a quick foamy light tan head. Roasted fruit skins malt flavour is gentle. Medium-full body. Average, finish is a little dry.

Cask at the Victory - came near black, but when held to the light showed signs of red and brown. Thick, almost nitro looking head on one, thin bubbly head on the next - the nature of cask. Served too cold, but as it was allowed to warm, subtle aromas wafted out - chocolate, roast, some citrus. Flavour so nice - milk chocolate upfront, followed by fresh citrusy hops, then finishes with bitter dark chocolate and a touch of espresso mingling. Ultra smooth and soft - this is one I could drink lots of - another superb offering from Bruce. Black IPA? Hoppy stout? Whatever it is, it’s great.

Lots of hops, and lots of malt, with quite a bit of smoke, and roast. But these all seem to mingle quite well together with the hops dominating the finish with a good citrus punch. Interesting stuff. Volo Cask Days 2009.
