Imperial-John (91), Mississauga, Ontario, Canada Apr 9, 2008 On tap at Rhino, westend Toronto. Black with off-white small head. Faint choco aroma. Too clean tasting stout, not tasty enough for me but very easy drinking so makes for a good starter if you’re thirsty.
Rastacouere (5270), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Aug 10, 2008 Objectively speaking:
Relatively dull stout with little complexity.
I like:
Adequate roast level. Mild dark fruits touch bordering star anise. Easy-drinking light-body. Soft hoppy whispers. Mostly dry.
I dislike:
Like many dark beers, it does not feel too fresh at all. Rather non descript roastiness feeling neither coffee-like nor chocolatey. Just plain calcinated grains.
The_Jester (493), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada Aug 10, 2008 On tap at the Magpie in Toronto a while back. Dark chestnut brown with just a film of head. The aroma is mild, with chocolate and a little smoke. The taste is very chocolatey, somehow both sweet and bitter chocolate. The roast hits about half-way through. There is the slight taste of herbs in there as well, and there’s something slightly off on the top of the tongue throughout. Full body and light carbonation. Not bad. Smooth and syrupy. Toasty malt and coffee presence is very apparent. I like!
