Evensong is a rich ruby coloured 20C English bitter. Based on an original recipe from 1937 this beer captures the flavour of its time. Goldings and Fuggles hops combine with darker malts to give a traditional English character.

50 cl bottle, ’bbe’ March 2016. Oxidised copper colour, veiled, minimal light beige head. Nose - the best part of it: apples, caramel, cake, dark bread, fortified wine. The initial sweet, velvety taste and mouthfeel, reminiscent of a fresh cake last for a couple of seconds and then flow into a less pleasant harsh dry, burnt-bitter aftertaste. Inviting, but still missing a kind of point somewhere.

Bottled - don’t know bottling date, but I guess it’s quite fresh. Aroma: porter-like roasting, fruity notes, pleasant. Clear, brown with ruby hints. Head slightly brown and delicate. Bitter and medium sweet. Rather soft carbonation, nice bitter lasting finish. I’m not sure why, but I’ve actually expected sweeter beer. It was pleasant surprise. Would drink again.

500ml bottle. Pours a hazy deep ruby, with a huge off-white head (I suspect this one has been shaken up somewhere in transport), which lasts well and leaves decent lacing. Toffee and burnt caramel malt mix with restrained honeysuckle and leafy hops notes to create the aroma. Fruity, spicy hops up front lead through a floral flavour into a rich toffee malt body. Stewed fruits and spice come through in the finish. I love a good bitter, and this one is a fine example, with restrained English hops character and a good malt backbone.

Dark, deep red/brown ale with a tan head. Satisfying aroma of caramel. Light and easy to drink, mild carbonation with fruity and roasted caramel/toffee notes. Finishes with a pleasant tang. Very enjoyable.
