Shared bottle at Cardinal.Pours clear mahogany with a small creamy beige head. Aroma of caramel malts, prunes and fruits. Taste is creamy and smooth, nutty malts, herbs and liquorice, lingering herbal, nice one.

Ruby pour with a frothy tan head and clinging lace. Fruit, syrup aroma. Malt fruit and toffee flavour. Tart tangy finish. Hint smokiness.

Well, well. Earlier today, I had been bemoaning the bog-standardness of the Brown English Bitters I’ve had recently, and then the evening brings this: Deep russet pint, with a densely packed off-white head. Plumptious toffee and fruit aroma. Toffee blue fruit, and raisin flavours. Full bodied, chewy, smooth palate, bitter snap in the finish. I was reminded of Double Maxim, whih is a brown ale, which might give you a sterr as to the way this bitter leans. Lovely stuff.

Bottled. Mild noswe of coffee. Pale brown creamy head. Malty roasty coffeyish taste. Average hops. A nice robust beer.

500 ml bottle. Pours a dark red/mahogany with light head of big bubbles. Aromas of wood, brown sugar, and a bit of sour mash. Flavours of burnt sugar, resin, and tobacco. Quite bitter.

500ml bottle. Poured cloudy red/brown. Excellent lacing on glass from thick head. Taste: cherry. Overall: This beer is superior to many bottled beers I have tasted recently. A most unusual beer these days in comparison to the ubiquitous american hopped golden ales currently fashionable in the UK.

Bottle. Best before June 2013. A frothy tan cap that settles fairly quick, but leave a volcanic crust and adequate lacing. deep ruby colour. Toffee and dry nut taste. aroma is roasted toffee. Nice dry finish with a pleasant carbonation.

500ml Bottle conditioned: best before Dec 2013, poured into my Abbot Ale glass tankard at home on 27 Nov 2012.
Looked impressive: huge tan coloured head on a lovely ruby body with carbonisation bubbles rising through the clear beer.
The smell was malts all the way: nutty, chocolatey and toasted brown bread.
Flavour wise again the malts rule the tastes: still nutty, but so chocolatey, toasted/roasted biscuits with fruit notes within the biscuit. There is also an undertone of hop bitterness throughout the taste which balances out the semi-sweet malty molasses that are trying to take over completely.
Well carbonated and almost ’fizzy’ on the palate.
