Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy dark reddish-brown with a tight off-white head. Aroma is strong fruit, earthy cellar, and light hops. Taste is roasty, toasty malts that fade to an astringent, herbal dry finish. Some cinnamon/cloves as well.

Bottle from open all hours. Aroma is slightly tart fruit, grassy, smelly old cellar. Taste is bitter, pale malts, slightly iodine. Alright, but a million miles from an old ale.

A Mes rate: 50cl bottle from the Bottle Stop.
Black red, totally opaque and topped with an impressive beige head. Rich and malty with an old dusty character. Pistachio notes along with chocolate and plum. Slightly soapy in the flavour with an almost floral and herbal character in the finish. Close to really good but falls just short of the mark.

Cranmer’s 1549 Evensong service is one of the jewels of the Anglican ritual. The eponymous beer is pretty good too. Dark red brown with a huge, gushing off white head. Malty aroma, earthy and basic. Taste is roasted malt and ashy with a sourness in the background and some bitterness to follow. I enjoyed it after All Souls’ Evensong in a medieval parish church deep in the English Midlands, which seemed the right place and time.
