draft at volo in toronto. copper hue with off white head, it has mild grapefruit aroma and hoppy flavor. not as over the top as the name would suggest, but it is quite pleasant.

Cask Ale Pint enjoyed at the venerable Victory Cafe by Honest Ed’s, Toronto! Darkish coppery robe and nondescript aroma of hoppy-ish something and sweetish malt. Carbonation and fresh feel is somewhat pleasing but the hops are not individually expressive in the taste and the malts don’t tie in well. A somewhat jangly, un-integrated pint. But okay. Work in progress?

On tap at the Magpie. Copper in colour, with just a thick film of head. Lots of C hops in the nose, with some earthiness underneath. In fact, early, mid and late hop additions all make their significant presences felt in this beer. There is a lovely caramel malt backbone. Finish and body are just so-so.

Pours deep copper with nice big notes of hops. The citrus and bitterness predominates over the palate and offers a nice full balanced finish.

Old rate. On tap at Volo in Toronto. Pours golden copper color with thin off white head. Aroma of pungent piney hops, mild malt back. Taste has some citrus hops mixed with pine, decent malt and mild fruit in the mix. Finish is lingering and puckering. One of my very favorite Ontario IPA’s.

On tap at the Ceili Cottage. Pours a clear golden orange with a good-sized slightly off-white head. Aroma is has distinct, somewhat earthy citrus hops. Flavour has some caramel malt and earthiness but big citrus hops really dominate. Medium body and a fairly long bitter finish. A real credit to the Ontario brewing scene.

Draught at the Beer Bistro in Toronto. LIght amber with almost no head. A slightly sweet hops aroma. Seems a bit too balanced with the hops lacking any real assertiveness and their flavor overwhelmed by the dry maltiness. As it warms some more resinous hop characteristics are noticeable. Smooth with a faint lingering bitterness.

On tap at Volo (long and strange story about how I ended up briefly at Volo today, my first visit). Taps a nice deep copper-orange, medium white-cap. Awesome piny citrus hoppy nose. Flavour is delciously well balanced, very nice malt bakcbone, but the hops steal the show. Good astringent feel on the back of the tongue, but not at all dry. Did I have the same beer some other people who’ve rated it here had? How could you not consider this a ’real ’ IPA? This was absolutely a spectacular pint. Fruity esters as well, in fact the beer as a whole kind of reminds me of Fuzzy Peach candy in a very pleasant way. Outside of extremely fresh Grand River Curmudgeon, this is the best Ontario-brewed IPA I’ve ever had.
