Our interpretation of an India Pale Ale. Not too bitter with extra aroma hops for interest.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malts; Challenger, Target, Columbus, Golding and Saaz hops.

50 cl bottle, Sheffield, UK via The Dram Shop. Kicking of the Xmas beer countdown. Pours a hazy deep gold apricot. Caramel, cereal grain and lemon zest aroma. Creamy, honey sweet then a orange rind bitterness builds at the end. Quite nice.

Bottle. Dark hazy amber. Lasting white head and a bit of lace. Thick body. Flavour is herbal, floral and earthy at the same time. A nicer English style IPA than usual.

St. Cuthburt pours a sparkly, bright orange copperish body with a foamy off white head. Lovely carbonation with some spotty lacing and a overly unimpressive head. The nose is fruity and lightly hopped with a light breasdy malt and a fuzzy peach esque note. A hint of white sugar and light citrus. The taste is sweet and lightly malted with an overly fruity taste. Very subtle notes of lemon, grass, wheat, apricot and peach. Nothing in the taste compares to the nose. A nice, crisp finish with a light hop. St. Cuthbert has a medium body with some soft carbonation and a light subtle aftertaste of bitter hops. This is an okay brew, but nothing comparable to an IPA. The peachy sweet taste is lovely, but it is missing all the bitterness and hop character.

Tasted this in the Three Judges, Glasgow in December 2005. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear pale amber in colour with a thin white head. Very slight aroma of dusty hops but difficult to detect much else - despite the 6.5%! Thin resiny mouthfeel and poor lacing. Pale malts give a weak base which lacked both in body and complexity of flavours. There is a sweet golden syrup component but this is short lived. Aftertaste suffers from the same general malaise and hops can hardly be detected. Finish is sweet and thin with a faint alcoholic whiff. A poor Strong Ale and tasted far weaker than the 6.5% its meant to be.

500ml bottle pours a golden orangeish color with a small white head and thin lacing. Aroma is earthy and citrusy. Taste is earthy and citrus hoppy bitterness with some malty sweetness coming through as well. Medium body and light carbonation. An enticing enough IPA, but nothing really stands out on this one.

500ml brown bottle. Golden pour, hazy. Thin white cap despite a vigourous pour. Malty nose, caramel sweetness with only a faint suggestion of citrus. Taste has a marmalade-y mix of orange and lemon citrus hops over a light caramel malt base. Soft bitterness in the finish featuring orange peels and grass. Has nice English malt aftertaste. Light bodied, good natural feeling carbonation. Pretty soft and subtle for an IPA, but the site classes this as an English Strong which I guess suits the beer a bit more. Malts are nice though, hops are in the right places, but not forceful enough to hold my interest. Itís subtlety might be itís strength depending on who you are.

Bottle,11C. Almost clear orange with a white head. Aroma of orange blossoms, earth, caramel, lemon, alcohol. Slightly sweet with biscuit, caramel, peach, then quite earthy bitterness and a dry finish with some wood notes. A little too much carbonation, but perhaps thatís part of the Belgian influence on what remains a very English beer. Lots to like, but the alcohol sticks out too much.

a little disappointed by this. i thought it was a bit on the tart side and didnít really have much in the way of a hop profile. maybe i got a duff bottle not up to the usual durham high standards.
