2.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20 boboski (1095) - Alabama, USA - NOV 15, 2007
Pours a crystalline light gold with a lightly lacing small white head. Boring to a fault. The first thing I noticed nosing this was that there was hardly any detectable alcohol at all, a pleasant surprise. Then some less pleasant facets set in: a lemon/lime note is bold and too soda-related. Pilsner malt and mineralic qualites comprise the remainder of this simplistic beer. Is there a point to offering filtered Duvel. I know that this weas originally conceived for a festival or similar, but I still don’t see the point. The flavor is far too sweet to retain any refreshing qualities, but those are trampled by more spritzy carbonation and soda-like syrupyness anyhow. The palte is too sticky, low-medium carbonation is too active and reckless. Cloying and annoying. what a pity. I am awfully glad that this isn’t the version of Duvel that’s available in the United States - this is a massive departure from the fantastic qualities the standard Duvel exhibits with great consistency.

Sometimes it’s not the super special beers, you know the new sour Russian River or big Imperial Stout or non-imported lambic, but a simple Belgian beer that really gets one giddy as a school girl. I have wanted to try this since I learned about it years ago, knowing well that it probably wouldn’t be anything special. I was extremely happy to see that JoeMcPhee had brought this from his Belgian trip to share with us. I don’t know if I made it well known but again thank you very much Joe.
It’s not a complex beer, basically a sort of Duvel-lite. It’s a bit sweeter, less complex, not as spritzy, and comes off as more unbalanced beer. The worst part is it doesn’t come close to the beauty of the regular Duvel. 2X25cl bottles, St Paul tulip/snifter glass.

Thanks to JoeMcphee for sharing - bright golden beer - sweet and herbal aroma, with strong pilsner malt smell, honey, and lavender - much drier than the aroma suggests, but still pretty sweet - light mineral qualities - floral notes - some honey and balancing acidity - light and refreshing, but lacking complexity, giving off a rather "I’ve been made for people that don’t like regular Duvel" feel - I like regular Duvel.

Bottle shared by JoeMcPhee: A golden beer with near perfect clarity and a pillow of dense white head. The aroma seems a bit macro-ish, with a bunch of pilsner malt and mineral suggestions. Flavor is a bit papery upfront, then a light sweetness comes through from the malt back. A light hint of pear-like esters come through when it warms a bit, but that’s about it. Simple, and has a macro feel overall.

Thanks to JoeMcPhee for this beer I never knew existed. Poured a mostly clear light gold with a small white head. The beer smelled dry. Notes of spicy yeast and some sulfur. The flavor started a little sweet and very light. Short flavor with a mild bitterness on the finish. Not really my style.

2 X 25 cl bottles. Very, very pale golden beer. Aroma is very herbal showing loads of fresh pilsner malt, a touch of sulfurous character in the nose. The spice picks up a bit as the beer warms up, but it’s nowhere near as spicy as it’s bigger brother. Softly perfumey. It’s well-integrated, and pretty tasty, but I’d never take this over a Duvel. A bit too herbal and malt dominated, in contrast to the yeasty spice that I prefer.

25cL bottle, poured into Duvel tulip glass. Poured pale orange-golden with a rocky white head; head isn’t as huge as traditional Duvel. Sweet, slightly funky aroma, with yeast, coriander and citrus. Light, yeasty flavor, with orange, grain, coriander, and apple. Long, yeasty finish. Nice, refreshing beer, but not nearly as exciting as Duvel.
