The first two batches of Duvel Tripel Hop were brewed with Saaz-Saaz, Styrian Golding and Amarillo. From now on Duvel Tripel Hop will have a different hop every year that will be added in the brewing process as well as being used for dry hopping. For 2012 this hop is Citra.

Editor’s note: clearly distinguishable, in a circle on the label it reads "Dry Hopped with Citra 2012 Selection"

Hazy golden yellow colour, medium head. Did not smell as strong as I had anticipated, hops and citrus, some peel. Quite hoppy, but did not rock my hop! still can taste the citrus some peel...think I like the standard model better.

2012 bottle corked and caged. Pour has a clean golden color with a thick one finger head that retained very well and coated the glass the whole way. Aroma has a nice citra blast, citrus, spicy yeast, peppery hops, and some sweet grass. Really nicely dry hopped and far better than anticipated. Mouth feel is light and there is nice high carbonation. Flavor opens with the dry hops again, peppery spice, citrus, light malt, yeast, and it dries out a bit into the finish. I thought going into this it would be the regular Duvel with dry hops but this is a totally different beer with a hop based character instead of being yeast centered.

330ml bottle. Pours slightly hazy golden yellow with a massive, puffy white head. Aroma is fresh and hoppy with sharp citrus, passion fruit, lots of fruit overall, light cats piss, some grain. Taste is citrusy, fruity, herbal and a bit spicy. Notes of doughy yeast and light grainy malt as well. Finishes dry. High carbonation, spritzy but smooth mouthfeel. Loving the fruity layers the Citra adds. Awesome.

Pours yellow with high frizzy disappearing white head Intense citrusy and grapefruity aromas from the Citra hops. Hints of sweetness and tropical fruits. Sweet, sour, frizzy mouthfeel. Low bitterness, Nice fresh taste but somewhat abrupt ending. Overall very nice.

Bottle - 750mL corked and caged. Gold pour with a tall, bubbly foamy white head. Aroma is tropical fruit, dusty yeast, straw, floral hops and grains. Taste is dusty yeast, fruit, citrus notes, straw, malt, toasted grains, and strong hop notes. Soft booze as well. Body is medium with a strong effervescent carbonation, slight chalkiness, and light alcoholic warmth. Ends with more dusty yeast, tropical fruit, citrus, straw, grains, sweet malt, floral notes, and light alcohol.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Powerful smell of citrus, hops, fruits and grass. Similar taste with a yeasty aroma. Light body. Easy to drink but somewhat boozy.

Pours a crystal clear golden straw color with a never ending puffy head ala regular duvel (but isn’t the regular Duvel cloudy?) Anyway, this is nothing like the regular Duvel (which is a great beer in its own right), this is a totally different animal. Gone are the heavy clove and banana notes that dominate the nose, they are replaced by spicy and floral hop expressions. Amazing. I’d swear this was an IPA if I smelled it blindly. Almost a west coast style nose. First sip reveals that this is pretty much a hop bomb. Gone is the cloying Belgian style yeast that often got in the way of too many good beers. This is a totally different animal. The yeast is hidden, the spice is derived from the hops instead of the yeast, and this thing is totally juicy. Still finished dry, but with a spicy hop kick. This is a world class beer.

750 ml bottle bought @ systembolaget. Pours clear golden with a frothy white head that slowly dissipates while leaving some thick lacing on the glass. Smell is tiny sweet, fruity and tiny herbal with peaches, passion fruit, grapefruit juice, crackers, phenols, unripe banana, peppery wood, white grapes, green kiwi fruit, lemon zest, cloves and moist grass. Taste is fruity and very tiny tart with grapefruit juice, lemon zest, lemon grass, passion fruit, pineapple, peaches, lychee, cape gooseberries, white pepper, cloves, crackers, green kiwi fruit, dry peppery wood, white grapes, green grapes, moist grass and hints of lemon balm. Mouthfeel is crisp, dry, tiny fruity tart and medium bodied. Finish is dry, fruity and spicy with crackers, grapefruit juice, lemon zest, dry peppery yeast, pineapple, passion fruit and white grapes. Great refreshing and dangerously strong stuff. Wow!

Pours pale gold with a large lasting head. Nose shows lychee, passion-fruit, spicy phenols, light malt, pear and apple esters. Also some doughy notes. Flavours are similar at first with a bit of fruit and spicy notes. There’s a fair bit of booze in the finish. Too much carbonation.

Bottle. Pale yellow gold with a large white head. Aroma of lemon, winter oranges, some dough and spice - pepper, ginger, coriander - evident but very much underneath. Sweet with oranges, light dough, tarter and more bitter zesty citrus flavours with pepper and just a little alcohol. First sniff suggests it’s going to be overwhelmed by the lemoniness of the Citra, but the usual Duvel things pretty much hold their own. Makes up the loss of great balance of the normal one with punchy but well-integrated hop flavours. Dangerously drinkable.
