Hops: Saaz, Styrian Golding and Sorachi Ace. "Dry Hopped with Sorachi Ace. 2013 Selection"

330 ml bottle. L3243. BB 12/2015. From bierzwerg.de.
Hazy yellow colour with a small white head. The aroma is pure Sorachi Ace... grapes, mild bitterness, pissoir and mild sourness. The flavour is... delightful... bitterness, grapes, grapefruit, grass and some... tastefulness... Very tasty, very nice.

Tasted immediately after a bottle of the classic Duvel. Pours a lot clearer than normal Duvel, a nice deep yellow colour with a large bubbly 3 finger white head that quickly recedes to a film. Aroma is completely different - much less yeast & spicing on the nose but plenty of citrus, pine and grassy notes instead. Taste is lots of lemon, coriander, pepper, some sweetness, malt and a nice dry finish. Mouthfeel is thin & crisp. I'm not generally a real fan of IPAs but to me this is how hoppy beers should be. Really good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from saveur-biere.com. Clear light yellow, pretty sparkling body with big frothy white head, that leaves a good lacing. Very fresh aroma of yeast, citrus, spices, grapes, green apple, lemongrass, flowers. Taste is an interesting spicy/bitter/sour/sweet mix, with yeast, lemon zest, white wine notes, sour fruit notes, candy. The mouthfeel is medium, creamy, with a very strong carbonation and a bitter/spicy and pretty dry finish. The high ABV isn’t really noticeable. Really tasty! A well balanced, unique, refreshing, hoppy strong ale, with a distinct white wine character.

THIS... is what a hoppy beer is supposed to be. I have never tasted Japanese hops before but it’s a delight. The hop addition to the beer is so well balanced with the water that the beer is very refreshing. Such a delight. Nuts, herbs, grassy citrus bite

Those of us fond of American IPAs shouldn’t hold much stock in this "triple hopped" Belgian blonde. Aromas of dishwasher soap and copper pennies lead the nose. The carbonation is stunningly fine but the flavors are boozy and metallic with a grassy bitterness. Unpleasant. ---- http://instagram.com/pintofbitter

I poured an 11.2oz bottle into a goblet. It had a best before date of 10/2015 and cost $8 ($0.71 per ounce).

Appearance: Bright, glowing shade of banana-skin yellow. Crystal clear bottle with massive carbonation visible. Pours to a large, bright white, foamy head which laces and retains very well.

Smell: An interesting mix of spicy, herbal hops and a hint of lemony citrus.

Taste: I never was a big fan of Duvel, even though it’s world renown. This "Tripel Hop" edition seems to be an attempt to emulate the American style of hopping everything and I think it actually works quite well. Though they don’t use the common American type of hops, rather - Sorachi Ace, Saaz and Styrian Golding. The result is a Belgian strong pale ale that’s indeed hoppy - but not in the way drinkers like me are used to (and that’s a good thing).

The best adjective to describe this beer would be spicy. Black pepper, lemonpeel, grass, garlic and onion are all present in the taste here - both as the main palette flavors and the additive notes from the hops. While the classic Belgian base of amber and pale malts is indeed present, they aren’t the start of the show. There’s a delightful, zesty taste and sensation of banana and lemon with just a touch of Belgian yeast character at the crest of the swig. Otherwise, the hops are accounting for most of the flavor. It’s a nice change from the usual Belgian, though that spiciness might take some getting used to. I’d love to see them do this recipe with American hops, but as it stands, this is still a very good brew.

Drinkability: I can’t recall a beer that was more heavily carbonated to the eye than Duvel Tripel Hop. Interestingly enough, it was not too intense in the mouth. Spritzy and energetic for sure, but it does not tear up the tongue. The mouthfeel is on the thinner side and needless to say it’s crisp and finishes fairly clean with just a slightly dry, starchy aftertaste. It doesn’t feel nearly as heavy as its 9.5% ABV weight should - which makes drinking this all the more pleasurable of an experience.

33cl bottle @ home. Clear top hazy bottom, pale color, strong white head. Aroma citrus, caramel, hops, fruity, grass, bit floral, grapefruit. Light sweetness, medium bitterness, lightly sour, salty notes. Light body, average carbonation, moderated bitter finish, alcohol is quite well hidden. Not very special, but still a fine ale.
