Ah, the devil... That is allegedly what one of the brewers cried out when he first tasted this ultra-blonde, spritzy version of the old Victory Ale in the early seventies. Victory Ale was a Scotch-inspired beer (hence the iconic thistle glass) but when this revision was made, Moortgat created one of the greatest Belgian classics outside of the trappist and lambic worlds. It is the progenitor of a whole bunch of lookalikes, but so far I have not encountered one that beats the real thing. The complex brewing process results in a beer unbelievably pale for its strength, with the famous rocky, moussy, snow white head that has to reach the top of the glass when correctly poured; equally renowned it its spritziness, almost champagne-like, and further enhanced by the letter "D" engraved in the bottom of the glass. When the deposit is added, a light mistiness covers the paleness but the aroma becomes softer and sweeter. Appetizing and unmistakable aroma of pure and good quality pale malts, unripe peach, green apple, a hint of lemon zest, gin, pear, flowery and grassy, aromatic hops; pale malts come to full glory in the mouth, restrained fruitiness and sweetness, somewhat sourish like a green apple, strong carbonation (too strong for some), smooth, ending in a beautifully aromatic hop finish with warming, ’jenever’-like alcohol which nevertheless stays surprisingly subtle for a beer that combines strong alcohol with the palest blonde colour achievable in the genre. Ultra-important beer that has a lot of merits in the revival of Belgian specialty beers since the early seventies; in ’normal’ consumption, i.e. not rating, I prefer this ice cold in an outdoor café in medium summer. Great apéritif too, as the late Michael Jackson, a fan of this beer, righteously observed. Incontournable, as the French say: love it or hate it, but you can’t ignore it. A category of its own.

Light yellow bear with a nice white head, medium carbonation. Taste is fruity, spicey, sweet, hops. Anywhere available in the Netherlands, but not a bad beer.

A classic beer favored by many here in Belgium. Ideal thirst killer in the summer, or ideal companion for a good meal.
