dark with a tan head. Not much aroma - dark chocolate and a hint of hops. Tastes of a generic malty sweetness. Some chocolate, but no roast or black malt flavours.Bitterness come thorugh at the end, but with an unpleasan astringency. Seems quite watery for a 6.5% beer. Underwhelming.

run of the mill sweet stout. Nothing really bad, but nothing really great either. Nose is soft, some roast with chocolate, vanilla and carmel. Taste follows nose but with more lactose and water. Roast picks in in the feel. Quite smooth and creamy. Could use more roast but otherwise decent

500ml bottle. Clear, dark amber pour with a short beige head leaving light lace. Malty, coffee nose. Medium body with fine carbonation giving a creamy mouth feel. Milk chocolate, toffee, bread, pine hops, caramel, licorice and a hint of root beer (!). The bottle tells you to serve chilled, but this one improves as it warms a bit. Not overly sweet or heavy, I could drink a fair amount of this delicious stout.

maneliquor (1190) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - AUG 15, 2011
UPDATED: NOV 9, 2011 Tap at Beervana. Pours black with some faint red tinges around the sides of the glass. Chocolate malts and yeast is about all I get on the nose. Sweet, dark chocolate and rich cocoa surround the taste with a hint of liquorice. Normally I would like this but I don’t think this has come togther very well. A little bit boring with a bitter liquorice finish

Looks about as black as it can come while still able to show rosy red notes in the pit of the glass. Off white collar of head that is slowly subsiding. Aromas of raisins, molasses and pumpernickel. Not bad, butnot knocking my socks off especially. Sweet and medicial initially with berryfruit and cherryvite flavours. Likeable enough but I’d find anything more than a pint heavy weather (Ha. The Sou’Wester here in Canterbury brings rain, sleet and bad weather). Yeah, not bad at all.

Ungstrup (23969) - Oamaru, NEW ZEALAND - DEC 1, 2010
Bottled. A dark chestnut-brown beer with a brown head. The aroma has strong notes of malt and nuts as well as medium notes of caramel and lighter notes of roasted matl and bread. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, bread, nuts, and sirup as well as hints of coffee, leading to a dry and roasted finish.

Bottle 50 cl. Courtesy of Ungstrup. Pours black with a vague orange tint and a small beige head. Sweet hard roast malt with some vanilla. Medium body, sweet hard roasted malts, vanilla and dark dried fruits. Some molasses also. No real bitterness, just sort of a sweet licorice finish. 301110

Aroma: The bottle says server cold which it was when I poured it. I smell almost nothing. It does have clearly discernable tastes though which indicates that the nose is small but it does have significant aroma, if that makes sense. Next time I’ll try it at room temperature. Appearance: Deep brown almost black and virtually opaque but clear, no evidence of particulate matter. Head was fine and dark yellow/brown but thin and dissipated quickly. Taste: Complex. Cacao and coffee. Medium bitterness with a slight hint of sour, not much of a lingering aftertaste, which is good for me. Leaves a relatively clear palate. Palate: Full with a slightly think texture. Carbonation is light but discernible. Finishes fairly clean with a nice bitter taste. I did not average the total since I am not at all sure about the aroma. It is anomalous so I did not count it in the overall score and chalked it up to the lingering effects of a slight cold. I’d buy this if I saw it Chicago or Kansas City to be sure. Very nice and after having both a number of these over the last few months I’d say, here in New Zealand, it seems to be very consistent.
