Copper coloured with a lovely smooth slightly caramel taste.Full of body but not overpowering despite its 6.5 per cent strength. I think that France is very underated as a beer producing nation-this will stand up against all but the very best.

UPDATED: MAY 3, 2003 Great fruity nose. Cloudy golden amber with small off white head that fades quickly to lace. Malt, toffee, and fruity cider apple taste, with a long fruity finish. Has a yeasty Belgian tone to it, but subtle. A very drinkable, very pleasant ale, without the attention-demanding complexity of the Belgians. Delightful.

UPDATED: DEC 1, 2003 Like nigos I read Michael Jackson's descriptions of this beer and agree with him on all counts. The only word he left out was that it had a caramel nose to match its rich amber colour. Very good lacing in the glass. A beer that I would like to keep a lot of. RE-RATE: After a bit of keeping this actually becomes a bit cloying. It deserves to be downgraded.

UPDATED: OCT 10, 2009 Brought this from France in a very heavy backpack and a railroad strike in Paris, but it was worth the effort. A little maltier than most Bière de Gardes I have had since but very enjoyable. Page 152 of Michael Jackson’s Great Beer Guide only 415 out of 500 Classic Brews to go.

Tried at Holiday Wine Cellar Beer Tasting. A touch light struck, but it faded quickly. Otherwise, great smell of malt. Medium to fine lacing. Very drinkable. I seem to be rating it higher than others, but I love the maltiness in the flavor and aroma.

I’ve been drinking Jenlain for years, buying it direct from the brewery in the late 70s. As output from the brewery has grown over the years and Jenlain has become more popular, the beer has lost nothing of its distinctive taste. Goes down a treat, especially with some smoked ham or Cantal cheese !

UPDATED: DEC 27, 2010 750ml:Corked. I drank this as one of my two beers of first choice while living in Brittany , Along with Trois Monts.:
Its easy to locate in 750mls or if you’re really in the mood for this, mini kegs too.,
A good , honest biere de garde . Not looking too be anything other than charming and drinkable. Lots of nutty sweet malt flavour giving caramel and then the text book earthiness found in this style. A mild dry bitterness ,with minty feel. Very plesant,

33cl bottle by SMA supermarket in Rome. This is the very first bière de garde I tried in life and I was surprised. I never expected good beer coming from France. The aroma is floreal, a bit fruity. Color red, quite clear. Refreshing and harmonious taste. It’s perfect to drink while you eat fish or seafood
