COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The festive season just wouldn’t be the same without this speciality beer whose arrival is always long-awaited. The tradition of Christmas beers is particular to northern Europe. In the years following the Second World War, the breweries used to sell an original, richer and stronger beer at the same price as year-round beers: this was their gift to their customers. The Duycks have perpetuated this custom by creating a special beer sold at the usual price. Produced with more malt than Jenlain Ambrée (3 different types of malt made from French grown barley and 3 varieties of the most aromatic hops from Alsace), this top fermented, unpasteurized beer, best served at between 6 and 8°C, has a rich amber glow, a denser head and stronger alcohol content (6.8% alcohol by volume). Darker than the traditional amber beer, its torrefied undertones are reminiscent of flowers and caramel. And the 2002 Christmas beer had a hint of orange.

Tasted at a Christmas in July party with a few fellow SoFlo beer geeks. I can’t really say too much about this beer other then the fact that it carried a good amount of spice to it, along with citrus notes.

(bottle - corked & caged 750 ml) Copper pour with a thick white head that fades down to a little less than half an inch. Flowery and sweet aroma with a mild spice hint. Flavor begins rather spicy and bitter with a light touch of cocoa immediately behind it. Caramel and spice come in near the middle with a very light hint of nuts and bitter hops. Finishes bitter and slightly metallic.

Corked bottle.
Pours an average glassy amber with an aroma of nutty, diluted bourbon and sweet biscuit. Flavor is malty raisin sugar water and a touch of fall leaves. Watery mouthfeel. Meh.

Tasted 2010-03-13. Bottle from 2009. Pours golden / amber with off-white head. Sweet ’n’ spicey - christmas style. A little cloying, and with a slight metallic aftertaste, but overall a decent, drinkable brew.

Bottle picked up at Carrefour, Citi Europe, Calais, France 22-02-10 consumed 26-02-10 Pours dark orange with a light beige head. amber. Flavor is sweet with some honey flavours, touch of orange bit of spice, quite decent but if truth be known it wasn’t fantastically memorable. A6 A4 F6 P3 Ov12 3.1

THOUGHTS: Like nothing I ever tasted before. Not very Christmasy tasting, but a very nice Christmas gift. Not the greatest beer I’ve ever had, but a very unique beer and after try over 800 beers that’s saying something. I wasn’t used to grassy hops being matched with the very malty, nutty, toasted flavors and aromas. It made for a very different profile. TECHNICAL: Bottle. When it poured it looked clear, reddish, brown (chestnut), but when held to the light it was mored of a dark orange to light brown. It had a small to average, off-white head that mostly diminished and didn’t leave much lacing. The aroma was moderate to heavy toasted, nutty and caramel malts; light to moderate grassy hops; peach, cherry, apricot, and toffee. The initial flavor was rather sweet; while the finish was very sweet, lightly bitter and ever so slightly sour with an average duration. There was caramel malt, toast, nuts, champagne, red wine, grassy malts, cherry and a little citrus. The light to medium body was very easy to drink and was a bit syrupy and then ever so slightly dry with rather fizzy carbonation and a dry and slightly astringent finish.

Pours deep amber into a snifter. White head quickly recedes to hug rim. Sour pit fruit aromas. Sweet and fruity upfront turning slightly sour in the lasting yeasty finish.

750ml bottle. Pours clear dark amber with a thin off white head. Smell is orange citrus and spices with some caramel candy sweetness in the background. Tastes of toasted grains and candied sugar, light caramel, musty, herbal flavor along with a little clove, orange peel, some spiciness. Very champagne like mouthfeel.

UPDATED: FEB 5, 2010 Bottle. Deep amber pour. The nose is sweet and a bit honeyish with an unusual dark candi sweetness. A fairly odd kiss of clover honey and a bit of strange herbal character. There is some bitter orange on the back. It’s hard to put my finger on why I don’t like this, but I really don’t Tap at Ginger Man. Clear pale amber pour with no head. The nose has very little aroma actually. A touch of light candy sweetness and a little bit of soft toasted sweetness as well. It is strangely clear with little contribution of either yeast or malt. There is just a touch of orange peel and some cotton candy. Very, very strange brew. A touch of citrus on the back. Peppery 6 3 6 2 11
